In Short
Tickets are often still available for tapings. You can register at the "Late Show"'s official website or report to the box office at 1697 Broadway Monday through Friday between 9:30am and 12:30pm or Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 6pm. Online ticket-holders have to answer a trivial question in order to receive tickets. Tickets from the box office are awarded on a lottery basis. Stand-by tickets are sometimes available; those interested can call (212) 247-6497 starting at 11am each day of taping.
Best TV taping
by nycbella
Dave's show is simply the best. Even if you're not a fan, the experience of seeing the show is really fun. Paul Schaffer's orchestra is phenomenal; it's worth it just to hear them play during commercials. Studio is a bit cold- bring a jacket.
- Pros: awesome guests, runs on time, great band
- Cons: cold, tix. sorta hard
A real theater, not a TV studio

I've seen a bunch of TV tapings and the Late Show is the best by far -- in terms of being in the audience. The cameras are almost unobtrusive, unless you're sitting right down in front. And the taping rolls at virtual real time -- it's not as if you're sitting there for hours to tape a one-hour show. Getting tickets is tough, but it's worth the hassle.
- Pros: Historic theater
- Cons: Hard to get tickets
