Deceivingly Large

by drink_club1

The place is a bit disorienting. It's another one of those bars that works like the Dr. Who police box (or was it a phone booth?) You walk in, and it looks like a small bar with loud clientele, a harried bar-tender and not much room to do anything. Then you notice the staircase in the back of the bar. Upstairs is a nice dining room, off of a nice booth-filled diner-ish area, and upstairs from that is yet something else. I didn't check that one out.

They have a very good Irish beer selection, including Murphy's on tap.The food was okay, nothing to write home about. The curry samosas were tasty, but way too mild. They were made for New York (or Irish) tastes, I guess. Mary was our waitress and she was great... affable and there exactly when the glasses needed refilling. (Hey bossguys, if you're reading this, give that girl a raise!) The atmosphere was friendly and eclectic. We met a huge table of Norwegian bikers... one of whom had to be heimliched during the course of the night. Food is served late and because of the (hidden) size of the place, you'll always find a table. =-Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC Drinkers

  • Pros: Large size, helpful staff UPSTAIRS
  • Cons: Tight and harried DOWNSTAIRS

great bar, great sit down dinner

by travel568

I am a New Yorker and tend to avoid the tourist traps but this one TOTALLY is not. When ever I am around Time Square, I always stop buy for a drink or a nice relaxing sit down with my friends at the restaurant. They are attentive but not annoying. great place to watch the game.

Its too bad some other reviewers had a bad experience, I always have a good time.

  • Pros: drinks, service
  • Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Can't Wait for New Year's 2009

by Caymanny

WOWOWOWOWOW. Like all native New Yorkers, I have always abided by the golden rule of avoiding Times Square. Before this year I had never seen the ball drop in person. Well somehow my friend got me to attend the New Year's bash this place has every year and it was AWESOME. Open bar 9-1, awesome DJ, and a buffet. And I got to see the ball drop too! The managers were so lovely, real nice Irish people. Food was GREAT and the drink was even better. Can't wait to go back, and I'm already thinking about booking my own party for New Year's 2009! Loved it.

  • Pros: Great food/drink, nice people
  • Cons: none at all

This place is in a great location, which is probably it's main positive. They do have a variety of beers, however, also tend to run out of just what you want. Bar staff, mostly imported from Ireland, can be talkative or attentive, or flat-out cold and rude. Also tend to mess up orders. Have only eaten there twice, found the food to be acceptable if not outstanding. I'd put this place in the category of ok to stop in for a drink or two, but not hang out very long. An ok in the middle establishment.

  • Pros: Location, beer variety (when they're fully stocked)
  • Cons: Service is so-so, bar can be crowded and tough to reach the bathrooms

Fantastic Tavern!!!

by nam1125

My husband and I stopped in at the Playwright Tavern on our way home from a show the other night. and we were so glad we dd! We were starving and this restaurant raised the bar for bar food--it was excellent!! We ordered appetizers and entrees (like i said-we were starving) and the appetizers came so quickly, thank goodness, to tide us over for the entrees. And did i mention beer? they had an excellent selection of beer on tap and in the bottle. The waiters were super friendly and extremely accomodating! My husband and I went home very pleased with our experience at this restaurant. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the Theatre District who wants good food in a comfy bar atmosphere!!!

  • Pros: great food, excellent servive

Wrong stop

by rjnyeater

I love to go to the city and try new restaurants, but this place was an mistake. My friend and I were walking through Times Square looking for a place to eat, everywhere we walked into had a long wait. There was no wait in here, instead there was a group of people by the bar who were very loud and drunk. The waitress stared at us as she sat chatting in a booth and only approached us because we were wondering where to sit. We didn't even get a menu, I had to get up and get them. The waitress took forever only to ask us what we wanted to drink. The food took a long time to come out and to top it off it had no flavor. My friend and I added salt and pepper, yet it was still tasteless. My friends steak was tough, the veggies dry, my corn beef was cold and no sides came with it. NEVER GOING BACK!

  • Pros: Times Square
  • Cons: Poor Service, Tasteless food

Poor Customer Service

by Travel22

Stopped in recently for dessert and drinks, only to find complete disappointment! We waited over 15 minutes for a piece of cheesecake!! Our waitress never came by to check on us, and mind you, it was not busy at all. We were not offered drink refills either and after being done with our dessert for nearly 20 minutes, I had to flag down the busboy to get our bill. The dessert and drinks were good, but not for the price. Will not return!

Great Mid Town Place

by joecarey

I born and raised in the city and I think this place is the best bar in midtown. Everytime I go there, either with my friends or my wife Margo, we always have a good time. There is always something going on there. Yeah, it gets a little crowded for the UFC fights but no one wants to go up stairs to the two other floors that show it. Thats where I watch them and I am a big UFC fan. The food is here and atmoshere is great. When you are there you should go and see KATIE RED the bartender. She will show you some tricks. There is always people there no matter what time you go.

  • Pros: There is always a good crowd there, food is very good.
