good food, very overpriced
by sunnynero8
I went here again last night after not going for over a year, and the quality of the food has dropped a bit. The prices, on the other hand, have not.
This is what I had previously written about the place:
"All of the food is amazing and they give you unlimited amounts of rice n beans. Only drawbacks are the really small seating area."
That holds somewhat true, but there are way too many other places serving very food of the same quality, at a much lower cost. I wouldn't recommend this place - it's nothing special. Not to mention that it's almost sad how empty it is, and the harsh draft that you can feel no matter where you are sitting in the small room - every time the delivery boy comes in and out.
- Pros: great food!
- Cons: pricey, small seating area
Staff are incredibly nice, portions (and restaurant) are quite small
by wisebrain
The wait staff was great, the owner is really sweet. The food was good, but the portions were so small. Yes the price is cheap, but I wanted more food....
- Pros: Service
- Cons: Small portions

Very small restaurant but very well decorated, We loved it!! We decide one more time choose a diffrent restaurant for our lunch and why not a Brazilian restauran??? We got a table and get surprised with specials on lunch and brazilian beer too!!! We had a steak with yuca, rice and black beans!! The food was great!!! We loved the waiter, a smal person with a great humor and good accent!!! We totally recomend that place and we will be back always!!
- Pros: Good food and service
- Cons: small restaurant
An authentic, divey Brazilian gem in midtown
by jennab522
I have been coming to this place for the past two years, a gem I found from reading Frommers when I first moved to NYC in 2004. This is my quintessential "date" place. The atmosphere is cute, cozy and relaxed. On the walls, are pictures of celebrities from Brazil, reviews from magazines and books, and some ethnic Brazilian artwork and cute Brazilian knick-knacks and instruments. The music is always amazing, whether it be samba or girl from inpanema type of music. The entire staff is from Brazil and the owner often goes to the tables to chat with customers. The food is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, and it's not too pricey. My favorites are the salmon and the arroz con pollo. They also carry Guarana, a Brazilian soda, which I am now addicted to. The staff is friendly most of the time but sometimes absent. The place is tiny, and you are in elbow room with the table next to you, but the positives way outweigh the negatives. Not a place for kids, but a great "date" place.
- Pros: Ambiance, food
- Cons: Extremely small
Delightful Spot
by karzipan
Quaint, colorful decor and savory offerings make Rice and Beans a certifiable cultural experience. A little pricey for pollo, but your pallate won't be left unsatisfied.

"true"brazilian cuisine
by luga112
I was surprised with this little Brazilian resturant. It is so small it hardly qualifies as a"restaurant"-as we see it in NYC-, but the food is simply delicious and the service _done by "natives"-was above average for the prices they charge.Try the "feijoada" if you're really hungry, and if you have a chance ask to speak with the owner, she is this sweet brazilian lady who will take the time to explain to you how everything's made.
- Pros: food, service, size
- Cons: size, music(too loud)
what a ripoff
by abcnubie
Possibly the worst restaurant I've been to these past couple of months.
The service was slow. The food was horrible. I paid 17 bucks for rice and bean pork/ sasuage stew. The pork flavorless. Not enough sasuage. The stewed beans were pretty flavorless too. I got an extra plate for my friend for 6 dollars. The plate came with 2 slices of orange, yellow rice n some vegetable. What a ripoff at 6 dollars. I also got some cod fish fried with onions, potatoes and egg. The cod fish was tough/chewy/cold and flavorless and cost 17 dollars. Never again would I set foot into this place. You can get better and cheaper rice and beans from any spanish american restaurant.
Good rice and beans
by gsp209
I ordered rice and beans with a chicken dish. I thought the chicken was moist and tender and the rice and beans were delicious. Also, the bread they gave as an appetizer was moist and warm. YUMMY!
- Pros: rice and beans
- Cons: cramped restaurant
