LOVE this place

by nyny10019

I am hesitant to write a rave review, as I would hate for the place to become so busy that I can't find a free seat anymore, however... this is really is a unique and wonderful place, completely free of attitude. From the first visit, I was treated like a regular by the incredibly friendly bar and wait staff. The happy hour is recession-friendly and the food is the exact opposite of what you'd expect from 'bar food.'

Thank you, Vintage, for many a terrific drink, terrific meal and many new friends!

  • Pros: Best bar & wait staff, great food and reasonable prices
  • Cons: none

Will you ever forgive me...?

by amecit64

I have to admit I have not been to Vintage in a long time...I had a horrible experience with one of the staff and I vowed to never go back. But, my friends dragged me there yesterday and I have so say I was pleasantly surprised! I can't quite put my finger on it, something felt different. I could tell they had perked the place up, felt sexier, and they had some new menu items that were tasty. We got the Nachos (of course) and then this veggie plate with cheese spread...can't think of the exact name, but it was AWESOME! My friends and I stayed all night, enjoyed the great mix of music, random people, better than bar-food food, and strong drinks... "Dear Vintage, I'm sorry I broke up with you...but now I am BACK!" ha.

  • Pros: staff(love Nadia), staff changes? (: food
  • Cons: jalapenos are sooo hot! Bathroom could use a facelift...

was always good until new manger

by florabound

I frequent this place more often than I probably should for a wine, there amazing nachos or to grab a quick beer. Its always a great chill spot, guac and nachos are amazing for it not being a full fledged mexican joint. Wait staff always nice, used to buy back one every few drinks.

Last night i went in there with a friend, sat at the bar and eveything was fine until this guy with jet black hair , more eyeliner than my mom in the 80's and a serious attitude comes in. He proceeds to go to the bar, yell at the bartender (who was just a nice girl doing her job) He clearly was her superior and wanted everyone in the place to know it. He yanked the volumn up on the music so disturbingly loud that the couple next to us at the bar looked over and said, why the hell is he doing that? The jet black hair with his tight cranky pants started putting out 8 x 10's of waaay too much information (somebody doesnt know jack about marketing) and when one patron at the bar kind of laughed and said, we can't read that (oh he had also dimmed the lights to a depressing degree) the manager snapped back, well here and through the candles in front of the 8 x 10's/ it was weird and laughably... I just felt bad for the staff. he was barking orders and made an unecessary scene. Clearly he has a chip on my shoulder and I'm afraid my favorite place may be tainted with his bad hair dye and bad attitude.

Moral of the story: if aint broke don't fix it.

  • Pros: nachos
  • Cons: new manager

Great staff, great martini selection, weird mix of customers

by drink_club1

The menu has 10 pages of Martinis! Sweet Martinis, Celebrity Martinis, I don't know what else. The beer selection isn't bad, and there's even a choice of bourbons!

The staff couldn't have been nicer. Judy our waitress was right there, and Kevin, our busboy was friendlier than a puppy. It was hard to peg the crowd. Mostly 30-somethings, few ties and jackets. Nice mix though, looks like there's a place for everyone from macho jocks to drag queens. Martinis were around the 10-11 mark. Beer 5-6. Pretty typical prices. Oh yeah, the music was NOT too loud. Yeah! --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

  • Pros: great staff, hot bartender, excellent alcohol menu

"Crappy Hour"

by MODEgirl1979

Vintage is great in that it has a nice low-key atmosphere for more artsy, down-to-earth types - I appreciate that, but it is not enough. I actually had not been there in quite some time, and I ended up being very disappointed when I recently went back. I went there for happy hour and ended up not having one. You see, Vintage has this absurd "rule" of only having happy hour in the front at the bar area - if you are forced to sit at a table or in the back lounge area, you are screwed - no happy hour prices for you (not that the happy hour selection or prices are anything to rave about). At least the server was honest when she said it is just a way to make the bar area look full...so people walking by will think "Hey, that place must be awesome!" My friends and I were really tempted to just walk out and go somewhere else, but we were total idiots and gave them our business...ONLY because we like martinis and did not feel like heading down to the West Village, where martini bars are more plentiful and offer better deals. I mean, the "Bar Only Happy Hour" rule is insane - especially in such an uncertain economic climate. Want MORE business, Vintage? How about a happy hour for ALL of your patrons. Oh yeah - Vintage boasts such a large martini menu, yet they fail to offer a lychee martini. The excuse for this? The juice is too difficult to get. Ummm...no it's not. There is a restaurant right down the street that has a lychee martini (for only $7!!!), and bar in New Brunswick, NJ that has one, too. My advice? Go to Vintage only if you must and DO NOT go for happy hour, because you probably won't have one!

  • Pros: Atmosphere, Drink Menu
  • Cons: Service, Attitude, Limited Happy Hour, Customers Not Valued

Great food and drinks

by coppiper

bill, (the owner) has a really nice place. The food and drinks are great.. always treated myself and friends great. Prices are not bad for NYC I would recommend to anyone. It must be hard to deal with the pretentiousness of the off Broadway actors that come in. In spite, he's a great guy.

  • Pros: Bill
  • Cons: royalty that walks in off the street

One of the best places to eat and drink in the entire city!

by Matthew08

I first found Vintage while walking back to my car parked at 42nd and 9th. I was looking for a place to get a decent bite to eat that wasn't garbage but not a million dollars either. Since then, I have made it a point to eat there every time I am in the city (I live in New Jersey) and recommend it to friends. The food is fantastic (I recommend the baked penne!) and their assortment of mixed drinks is impressive to say the least. The wait staff is friendly and courteous without being annoyingly over the top. The overall atmosphere is awesome: classy, understated elegance without being too showy. I recommend this place 100%!

  • Pros: Awesome service, food, drink and atmosphere.
  • Cons: Nothing that I have found yet.

Free Drinks when I go there, because I have no money

by bronxgopleader

HI, my name is Jay Savino and I am the Bronx County GOP Leader and when I go to my friend Bill Gouldman's Vintage Bar, I drink for nothing the whole night because I never have any money, because I do not like to work and when I leave the Vintage Bar, I am totally drunk and drive home drunk to Rockland County.
