This theater is a real treat for any movie goer. The theater itself is pure history. The seating is auditorium before auditorium was fashionable. The walls are covered in lush curtains and the decor is art deco all the way. I'm sure for the people who work there the challenge of working in such a historic place is a hindrance, but for the audience it is pure joy. Plus, this is New York! So be sure to stop off at the market and carry in your own candy. Be sure to get some popcorn at the concession stand though. The screen is huge and curtain covered. Be sure to go on a movie's opening night to experience the theater full as it should be.

We went to this movie theater and were quite shocked. First of all, all customers were asked to wait outside despite the fact that it was freezing and windy. Apparently, we were supposed to form a line outside the theater and wait for an hour until securities or whoever they were would let us in. By the way, all of the securities were standing in the lobby while we - customers who already purchased tickets - were literally requested to go and wait outside. And to be honest, we were not asked in a polite manner. Moreover, while waiting there we were not even allowed to use the restroom, one of the securities "suggested" that we should go to the Hilton hotel across the street and asked them to let us use their restroom.

The only good thing - we were able to get our money back and leave this place before we froze to death :)

  • Pros: refund
  • Cons: staff

The best movie theatre in Tri-state. No comparison. The ambience is key. The feel of the theatre is Broadway'esque. I enjoy the size of the theatre, the size of the screen, and the audio. The lobby is beautiful, with immaculant restrooms. The employees are very pleasant. Bringing in outside foods is wonderful, especially during morning showings.

  • Pros: Ambience sets the theme
  • Cons: Parking is expensive. No street parking.

The Scene
The Ziegfeld's got history (The current theater sits on the site of the original "Ziegfeld Follies"), a massive screen, elegant decor and impeccable projection quality on its side. What it doesn't have is stadium seating or adequate restroom facilities.

The Draw
This is the best place in the city to see big event pictures (like "The Phantom Menace"--which opened here), or any ambitious work that demands booming surround sound, a huge screen, and an applauding crowd of over a thousand. Be warned: Big events attract big crowds--lines for shows often stretch for several blocks. In terms of munchies, there's nothing new here. For variety, try the Au Bon Pain next door.

Hands down this is the best movie theater in New York, and a glorious change from the chopped up closets of Cinema 13.

The interior has a turn of the century feeling, and it hints of something big to come. And on that screen everything is big.

For action films like Attack of the Clones, nothing compares to the Ziegfeld. Yes, the seats are below average, the concession is mediocre and the bathrooms -- one for men and one for women -- are too small. But such trifles are forgotten when the lights dim, the curtain opens and some 1,100 moviegoers are treated to DLP video and a Surround EX audio system that delivers clear highs, a smooth midrange and low frequency effects that pressurize the theater. And the well-mannered audience recognizes that it is part of something unmatched at any multiplex.

  • Pros: Picture, Sound, The Experience
  • Cons: Bathrooms, Concession, Seat Comfort

This theater has a lot of history and is absolutely huge. Big screen and pretty good sound system. However, the place is desperately in need of new carpeting (dirty and old) and new seating. Seats are uncomfortable and not as large as in newer theaters. Interesting old theater.

  • Pros: large
  • Cons: carpeting
