How Your Money Contributes to Hateful, Bitchy People

by BewareofOWNER

This store is a lesson in how people are lazy because I am bitchy is what the name of the store should be. The owner, a former designer who apparently is very sadistic in her treatment of people. I went her to purchase a sewing machine. While browsing at the yarn I over heard the owner get very aggressive with her 30 something student.

Really shocked when I asked to look at a sewing machine how nice one of the ladies was. How she tolerates working in these conditions is beyond me. I decided to purchase the yarn and sewing machine around the corner.

There are many places to shop and learn to sew in NYC without enduring this type of treatment. I purchased my machine at LoveSewing Center. They only sell manual machines, but you can ask for a higher end Janome model. It is a lot better than the ones at Sew Fast Sew Easy.

Sewing Machines - LoveSewing - Janomes; ManhattanSewingCenter - Singer, Viking and Pfaff; Cityquilter - Berninas and there is also a place on 38th and 9th avenue that sells brother and Juki

Expensive Rude People waste of time and money $$$$$$$

by NY11

Don't waste your time or $money this place stinks your better off learning on your own just buy the book online better off. The old Lady that works there is scary RUDE!!! .Not worth the money you will be lucky if you learn something before you drop out. The website is much more promising then the school itself. Very small they need a bigger space for what they charge.

Moved on to a better school! : D

by rover49

Professional instruction from experts in the fashion industry. The classes are so fun and they teach you how to sew from a professional point of view. Sewfast Seweasy offers a wide variety of relevant sewing classes for fashionable pants, dresses and skirts to handbags. I started taking classes as an absolute beginner two years ago and now I am taking the advanced classes! It is really rewarding to master the skill set to make cute and fashion forward clothes!

BEWARE OF OWNER

by learningtoSew

I have stopped in this business a couple of times over the years to purchase notions. The owner, who I assume is the older really direct somewhat rude woman who is always there, should be cautioned against. I recently took classes here and refuse to return.

The first couple of times I went the staff seemed nice, she walked in and demanded the clerk come to the other room with a mean stare. The next visit, a nice lady with long black hair helped me purchase some yarn for a gift. I stepped out to the bathroom and when I returned they were yelling at each other in the other room talking about another "dumb" customer and a previous employee.

Finally, against my better judgement because my boyfriend bought a class for me, I returned. I took the class with the long black haired woman who previously rung me up. This was suppose to be an intermediate sewing class, but no one finished their skirts, several people quit prior to the start of the class and the patternmaking skills that are posted on the website were not completely covered. I am sure that if you are dead set on patternmaking, Parsons patternmaking classes are better constructed, and many other places even several blocks away, Love Sewing, Parsons, FIT are better suited for your money.

The owner is very abrassive so I wish I would have taken this class when a gentleman named James worked here. I missed my chance. If you look on craigslist for sewing classes I am sure you can find other even private classes like SewNY.

From what I understand from others in my class they took this class because the website was pretty and it came up first. Do your research for a good time!

Great classes regardless of your skill level!

by lurdis01

I have been sewing and making children's clothes for a while but never could get anything to fit me well. I took the intermediate skirt class and I finally made something for myself that fits great!! There are so many variations that they teach you that you could honestly make an entire wardrobe for yourself! I plan to take the dress class next! Thank you ladies for your wonderful teaching!

How to make a thousand-dollar skirt

by Eleanore

If you want to make a skirt that looks like it cost a fortune, buy a yard or so of really nice fabric and take the intermediate skirt class at Sew Fast Sew Easy. You get measured for a custom pattern before the class begins, make the pattern in muslin to insure a perfect fit, and you sew the best-looking skirt you'll ever own. My class was very small so it was like getting private lessons from the best sewing teachers around. Deborah and Elissa taught this class and they were both fabulous. They are serious here about teaching you the right way sew, and they have lots of industry tips to share. I left every session feeling like I had learned some secret technique that would really take my sewing skills to the next level. I took other classes a while back at Sew Fast Sew Easy to brush up on the basics. We made a pillow, tote bag, elastic-waist skirt and a t shirt. The quality of the instruction in all of the classes I have taken at Sew Fast Sew Easy has been consistently high. I think that I want to take every class that they offer.

Really Learned How to Sew

by ejsmom

I have been developing my sewing skills for almost 20 years. Sew Fast Sew Easy is where I started. I took every class that the owner, Elissa, taught. Why?

Because after taking my first class, I could tell that I was going to learn skills that I could use going forward - not just for one project.

Because I wanted to learn how to sew clothing that looked "well made" not "home made".

Because she isn't stingy with her knowledge -- Elissa is willing to share the skills that she learned from years working as a designer. (Yes, she has a REAL background as a professional clothing designer!!)

From what I learned at SFSE as my foundation, I went on to earning my tailoring certification at FIT. I sew everything from tailored jackets to elaborate evening gowns. Now I have decided to change careers and am in the process of putting together my own clothing line.

I got an incredible return on the money that I spent at SFSE. It turned out to be an investment in myself.

There are a whole slew of places in NYC that advertise sewing classes. If you are looking for a nice, easy going way to spend a couple of evenings - then maybe this isn't the place for you. If you want to learn how to sew -- and I mean Really Learn How To Sew, give this place a try.

Good Classes Depending on the Person

by TooLateMagee

The class I hear are good depending on the teacher. If you have to deal with one of the owner's, Elissa, it can be an utter nightmare. The store generally has what you need, but you can find the items in other stores in the garment district.

Shocked by negative reviews

by mickey1014

I am shocked by the negative reviews. If you are visiting sew fast sew easy to buy a sewing machine, you can't beat their prices. As for repair work, call the company, that is protocol for most electronic/ machinary purchases. Own a home and you know something goes wrong with an appliance you have to contact the manufactures repair department not the store you purchased it from.

Now as for the owners, Elissa and Gregory are amazing. I have taken classes with both owners. They are patient and thorough. I have learned how to sew a skirt, pillow, jacket, tshirt, leatherclutch, tote bag w/ a liner, wrap dress, buttons, hems and invisible zippers. I am able to be on my own and duplicate the work. All the teachers are excellent and patient and do an amazing job at simplifying sewing techniques. The next class I am taking is a pattern making class.

The price for sewing supplies at sew fast sew easy are competitive.I am from Bergen County New Jersey and have shopped in Jersey and New York for sewing supplies and machines and they all fall in the same price range.

I searched for a long time to find a good sewing class and I found it had sew fast sew easy. If you want to start making your own clothes and accesories you should attend classes at sew fast sew easy. I never thought I would feel so confident at sewing in a matter of three months. Do yourself a favor ignore the negative reviews, those people probably find wrong in everything. If you want to learn how to sew, attend a class, it will change your life. It'a wonderful hobby or career. Michelle

EXCELLENCE

by KevinSewingBags

I took a couple of classes with the owner Gregory. I started out in his Stitch and Bitch University. It is a beginner sewing class focused on working with dfferent fabric types. Sew Fast Sew Easy's owners actually make their patterns, which apply to commercial sewing patterns, but fit better.

We completed an elastic waist garment, 2 pillows, a tote bag and a t-shirt. I am interested in starting a t-shirt business, so this class was excellent. My girlfriend also took a class here with Crissy on Saturday mornings. She said she also really enjoyed it. As I understand from 2 woman who worked at the Juicy Couture home office, this is the chosed place to learn sewing in the Fashion Industry because of their methods and reputation.

The owner is a really nice guy who tries to keep the cost in line with the Manufacturers pricing. I found their sewing supplies and yarn in line with other retailers.

I have also taken the learn to sew with leather class and pattern drafting your own pant. Both teachers were friendly, knowledge-based teachers who really tried to get everyone on par with the skills needed to accomplish their goals.

Pure EXCELLENCE!

  • Pros: excellent knowledge, competitively priced, value for money
  • Cons: don't teach private classes
