Gilt-and-velvet uptown playground.
by Contributor
The Scene
Rock stars and Hollywood moguls mingle in the lobby with elderly matrons and corporateers. The hotel was dubbed "Hollywood East" in the 1960s, when Sophia Loren and Princess Grace were among the many regulars. The lobby contains enough marble and gilt accessories to redecorate Versailles; the bathrooms alone required 50,000 square feet of marble from Alicante, Spain. It's slightly over the top.
The Details
The 362 rooms and suites are furnished with silk and velvet fabrics, and plenty of leather and mahogany. Amenities include four-line telephones with data ports, fax, CD players, VCRs, granite-topped writing desks with ergonomic leather chairs and kitchenettes with microwaves and refrigerators. The service is warm and efficient and includes one-hour pressing and complimentary Evian and towels for early morning joggers. Food-wise, 540 Park Avenue originated the concept of the power breakfast; on weekday mornings you'll find executive types networking over egg-white omelets and bagels.
Great Business Hotel
by Oscar
With it's central location on Park Avenue at 61st street, nice rooms (a bit small) and an excellent staff, the Regency is a fantastic place to stay on business. It's known for it's "Power Breakfast", but for those who live in the real world, it's still fun to have breakfast there and laugh at all the people who buy into their own self-importance. All of the rooms were re-done over the past few years, so as long as you have a room high enough not to hear the traffic (over the 4th floor), this is a wonderful place to stay.
