wonderful tasty food

by EngGirl

I love this restaurant and especially its appetizers ? ALL OF THEM. If you go make sure you order the appetizer sampler, and ask for the Baba simply delicious. My only preservation is that I noticed that the quality and the quantity of the food are going gradually down. I hope they bring it back to what it used to be.

  • Pros: delicious food, appetizers, rice
  • Cons: quality and quantity are changing, using cheaper ingredients perhaps.

The worst Kabab

by tehrani

I am realy sad to write this review on a Persian restaurant, since I have respect to all my countrymen who I know are struggling in the U.S. to deliver the best service possible. We tried Kabab Koobideh, and two different kinds of Kabab Barg, but all three of those where uncooked and dry. My wife believed that she could still taste the raw meat in her Koobideh.

Moreover, The waiter told us that a large picher of Doogh is $5.00 but we got charged $7. when we mentioned this to the waiter he simply responded that "7.00 is the price listed in the menu."

in the menu the name of the chef is mentioned and I know for fact that he/she is not Iranian. This might be the reason for the horrible taste.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

  • Pros: Doogh
  • Cons: everything

Taste like HorseShit?

by newyorkerreview

It was my first time in the New York area and my family and i decided to dig in to some mouthwatering persian cuisine. Due to the lack of any recommendations we decided to eat at persepolis. Although the dough (yogurt drink) was great, everything else was terrible. The kabob, including their Filet Mignon was horrible. I would not recommend this for anyone who is familiar with the persian cuisine. Our final bill came out to be about 80 bucks.... a very harsh consequence after eating this disgusting food. I am still recovering from the noncooked, unmarinated kabob. Its in every burp, every gas i pass, every breath. I cannot wait till i recover from this terrible decision. Stay away. Make your own persian food, do not go here!

  • Pros: Yogurt Drink, Friendly Service
  • Cons: Everything ELSE!

Great food and mojitos!

by judibean

We got there early enough on a Friday night (7ish) to score seating for two w/o a reservation. However, it started quickly filling up after that until the restaurant was full, so I would say you should make a reservation just in case.

This was our first time, so we tried to stick to what other people recommended. We got the eggplant mirza (great if a little salty) and shirazi salad to start. The eggplant was the better appetizer. For entrees, I got the fesenjoon that everyone raves about, and rightly so. The chicken stew was really tasty with complex flavors and over sour cherry rice, it was a knockout combination. My husband ordered the shandiz, which is lamb on bone. He ordered it with dill rice. The dill rice was more buttery than "dilly," so I would recommend you order the sour cherry rice instead. The lamb was midly seasoned, and I took a bite of it and wasn't impressed. We also had a pomegranite mojito and watermelon mojito. The watermelon flavor was a bit overpowered by the rum. The pomegranite was better.

The only complaint I have is the temperature, which was on the colder side. The door opens up right onto the restaurant w/o obstruction, so each time a person walked in, we got a breeze and we were in the middle of the restaurant. They did turn up the heat after someone else complained.

  • Pros: Great chicken stew and pomegrante mojito
  • Cons: Not that warm inside

Fine Persian Food

by charlesmstam

Persepolis is a good local Persian restaurant and I enjoy eating there. The food tastes fine and the service is always friendly and welcoming. The cornish hen tastes really good with the cherry rice. I also recommend the barley soup. The decor is a lot sleaker since they changed locations. But in the end, it is nothing more than a solid neighborhood Persian restaurant. If you are around I recommend checking it out, but it doesn't merit a huge schlep.

  • Pros: Good Persian Food, Friendly Service, Reasonable Prices, OK Decor
  • Cons: Nothing Out of the Ordinary

Make sure you get your change!

by crahimi

I'm half Persian, and my grandmother was a fabulous cook. The menu didn't impress me as overly authentic. When I asked the waiter if they had chelo (melt-in-your-mouth steamed, buttery rice) he didn't know what I was talking about. Persians are known for their hospitality, but the vibe I got was watchful and superior. On top of that, the waiter was patently reluctant to bring our change (did he think we'd forget and he'd get a $20 tip?). If you're looking for great Persian cuisine and a welcoming, authentic experience, go elsewhere.

Absolutely delicious! Will definitely be back

by avgvst

I've never tried Persian food but heard great things so we decided to try it and I'm glad we did.

The service was warm and attentive. The waiter offered to move us to another table because we were sitting next to two big families - and we didnt even ask. The food was fresh, with just the right amount of spices (not to hot, not bland) and the portions are big. I ordered the chicken stew with pomegranate and sour cherry rice... WOW. It was probably the tastiest thing I've ever tried. My boyfriend ordered the Caspian, ground sirloin and saffron chicken --- it was also very juicy, fresh and again, delicious. The waiter, Salvador, was attentive but not pushy and whole experience was just perfect.

This is very different from the typical, snotty and impresonal city restaurant where they expect patrons to feel lucky just to get a table.

Love it, love it\, love it and will definitely be back

  • Pros: Great food, selection, service and atmosphere

Most outstanding Persian cuisine

by isheh

I am a hardcore fan of Persian cuisine. I was raised on it. I have tried every major Persian restaurant in LA and NY. Persepolis is by far the most consistently excellent Persian restaurant I have found. It is perfection. The food is high quality, generously portioned, authentic, healthily prepared. The service is impeccable. The best doogh I have ever tasted. Delicious barg, koobideh, joojeh kabob, shirazi salad. It's rare to actually crave a specific restaurant's food, but their food will do that to you.

Would have to find a good excuse not to go back

by regisjlee

I try not to go to the same place twice in NYC - but I would really have to struggle not to go back there right away.

I'm craving the sour cherry rice right now.

Service was off-the-hook. They were "gracious." Less than half the people waited at a table for the rest of the party for over an hour while the rest of the place was packed, and no one said anything or made us feel uncomfortable. The place is very clean because they just moved into a new space. It's not very expensive either for the outstanding quality of the meat/salads/rice. I really really really recommend this unpretentious, aesthetically pleasing, delicious, amiable restaurant.

  • Pros: everything
  • Cons: slightly cramped, but that's standard in NYC

One of my FAVORITE places to eat in NYC!

by lovebomb

I eat out a lot! I come to Persepolis at least once a month and everytime I come, the food, service, ambience, drinks...everything is absolutely amazing. The owner and maitre 'd are extremely gracious and I love the fact that they remember what I drink! The servers take such excellent care of my parties and never stick their noses in at inappropriate moments. I love that they are so well-mannered. The food...honestly the kubideh is some of the best meat I've ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. And the sour cherry rice? Brilliant. I can honestly say that the weight I've put on has been solely due to eating at this beautiful restaurant. It really is one of my favorite places to eat in this whole city!

  • Pros: Excellent food, Reasonably priced, Excellent service
  • Cons: N/A
