Why leave the borough?
by Jordieyoyo at Citysearch
It is in the middle of Manhattan. The Bronx Zoo may be fine, but as far as convenience. The Central Park Zoo is a must. Just don't feed the Polar Bear.
An inexpensive city destination to see animals in their natural habitat.

In Short
The Central Park Zoo and the Tisch Children's Zoo draw groups, families and kids. The most popular exhibits are the tumbling polar bears and the penguin house. Volunteers inform and educate classes and families on the subjects of conservation, the environment and wildlife. Those interested in volunteering at the zoo must complete a 10-week training program and make a one-year commitment of two days per month.
day of fun for a big kid

I decided to go here on whim after walking through the park. I was alone, but I had such a great time. There's not a ton of animals like the Bronx Zoo, but it's an intimate atmosphere and small enough to easily walk around and not get too tired. I watched the polar bears for a good twenty minutes. It started to rain, but there's plenty of awning and indoor exhibits to take refuge in. Mostly all the animals were out and about doing stuff. They don't take credit or debit, but for $6 who cares?!
- Pros: great price, cute animals, intimate park

Took my 7 year old daughter - not a lot to see which translates to very little walking which is good, SHE LOVED IT ! Despite that there are not many animals, the ones that are there are VERY entertaining and close up with a great view of them !
- Pros: close up view of anim, Little Walking, Price
- Cons: Variety of Animals
A Gem

Small but perfect, this zoo takes you from one world to another. Beautifully landscaped, with lovely, natural exhibits, the adults in our family always love trips here as much as the kids.
- Pros: Beatiful, Easy to navigate, Inexpensive
Unbeatable price, Great afternoon!
by sunshine221 at Citysearch
We recently spent the afternoon here and were delighted to find such a small fee for such a great treat! $3.50 for adults and 50 cents (really!) for children! The wildlife center is small enough to get through in about an hour but exciting enough for children and adults of all ages. There are posted times for different "chats" about the animals, feedings and skits. Spend an afternoon here and enjoy!
- Pros: Inexpensive, Educational
A Hidden Gem

I recently took my 14-month-old son to the Central Park Wildlife Center and he loved it...as soon as we entered the penguin room he started squealing in delight. It's a relaxed zoo where crowds are thankfully thin. And with a quick snack at the cafe, the whole thing cost us less than $10.
