We had a family wedding with out of area friends and family attending. We had them stay at the Hotel Plaza Athenee at a group rate. The hotel was very accomodating and very nice. They all enjoyed it.

This hotel is a hidden gem. Total class & the highest level of service from an outstanding experienced staff. On a quiet sidestreet near all the best shops. The rooms are a nice size & recently renovated. The bar is bohemian & dimly lit, with a leather floor & a layout that creates comfortable private seating. The restaurant is top of the line, with the freshest food & unique & creative dishes. It's almost too private, but with that-you never know who you will see there if you go! A MUST TRY if in New York.

  • Pros: Small pets OK, Service & food, Location
  • Cons: High floor views only, Mid/upper priced, OK for families

The Scene
While the grand opulence of this hotel makes it seem suitable only for royalty, mere mortals--rather, well-heeled commoners--are heartily welcomed. Performance is high here in every sense. The lobby is a crystal-and-marble fantasy, with massive floral arrangements, murals, potted palms and Louis XVI furniture. Like its sister hotel in Paris, this magnificent establishment is a quiet, rarified gem.

The Details
The 152 rooms and suites mirror the luxury of the lobby, with their Frette robes and occasional pantries, replete with refrigerators and two-burner stoves. Kick up the decadence and stay in any of eight deluxe suites with dining rooms, terraces, and/or solariums. The multilingual staff includes three Clefs d'Or concierges who can arrange even the most unusual night on the town. A "health lounge" complete with exercise machines is open 24 hours a day. The lavish dining room, Arabelle, serves continental cuisine. It's also a Sunday brunch favorite.

This place is a gem. The best service you'll find in New York--attentive but unobtrusive, respectful without pretensions (a rarity in NYC), impeccable, from the ever-helpful concierge to the tirelessly accommodating room service and housekeeping staff. Spotless rooms, tastefully decorated, are wonderful to relax in, but the real reason to stay here is for snobbery-free luxury. If you're looking for a place to get away, rather than (God help us) be "seen," this is for you.

  • Pros: Quiet, Fabulous service, Great food & bar
