I can't stop thinking about this place - AMAZING
by sanderford at Citysearch
We ordered a cake from here for an office birthday and it was incredible. It was a large Red Velvet and everyone was completely satisfied.
My only con about this place is that you have to pay a delivery charge AND tip the delivery guy. So after all was said and done it costs us an extra $20 on our (approx) $40 cake which is a little excessive. However, I know a lot of other bakeries charge twice as much for delivery so I guess I have to keep that in perspective.
- Pros: the best cake I have had in NYC so far...
- Cons: price, delivery charge
Good icing, poor cake

We ordered a bunch of cupcakes and a red velvet cake from them. The selection of flavors was great and delivery was on time. The icing was good, but the cake itself tasted dry, like they gave us day old cupcakes and cake! Disappointing for the price.
- Pros: On time delivery, icing and flavors were good
- Cons: cake was very dry
good cake

I haven't tried the cupcakes nor have I visited the store, but I had a cake special-ordered for my birthday and I was happy with it. It was supposed to be delivered around 10 a.m. and it arrived at 10:30 which was fine. It was a traditional, chocolate layer cake with just the right amount of frosting. It was huge. It was a two-layer cake, but the layers were so large that one-third of the cake served 7 people. I thought it was a good deal.
- Pros: as promised
Just ok

I went here on Valentine's Day to pick up cupcakes I specially ordered. It all went fine until I actually tasted the cupcakes. The frosting is good, but the cake part was just stale. It tasted like it was a couple days old. I don't think I will be going back here especially with so many cupcake places all over the city.
Tastless Desserts and Bad Atmosphere
by ilovebakeries at Citysearch
I had been to Buttercup once several years ago but didn't really remember much, so when I moved to the area, I decided to go back. I now realize that the reason I didn't remember anything about it was probably because their cupcakes don't really taste like anything. The frosting isn't bad (it's butter, sugar, and milk--how could it be?), but the yellow cupcake was dense and dry and was flavorless. The chocolate cupcake was also dense and dry, and what little flavor it did have was far from chocolate. I also tried a brownie, which tasted stale and a piece of coffee cake, which had only slightly mor flavor than the cupcakes. Beyond the subpar desserts, the decor was terrible. It looked old (not in a cute vintage way!) and seemed to have been decorated by someone with absolutely no eye for design. It almost came across as tacky. Even though it is right around the corner from where I live, I will gladly make the trip to Billy's or maybe even Magnolia instead of going back here.
- Pros: ??? About the best I can say is that the service was average.
- Cons: Dry, tastless baked goods, Tacky, cluttered, mismatched decor
ok cupcakes, bad service

I ordered 3 dozen cupcakes from Buttercup for a photo shoot for a book cover I am designing. I chose to go there, because other shops I looked at didn't have the right color frosting, and since it was for a photo--that was pretty important. When first calling to get their hours and try to place my order, the person on the phone at the UWS location just didn't seem to know ANYTHING about the shop at all--and the woman on the phone at the 2nd ave location was short with me-- and rude! So, I physically went into the shop on 2nd ave instead, to place the order in person. Seemed simple enough: 3 dozen cupcakes with pink frosting to be delivered to a photo studio about 15 blocks away--and 2 tubes of extra frosting to use during my shoot for touch-ups, etc. The woman taking the order seemed to understand what I wanted--we had a detailed conversation about everything because, again, it was important to have exactly the right things for a successful photo shoot. I saw her write it all on my order form. But, the day of the shoot, no extra frosting was delivered. I understand mistakes happen--but when I called to ask them to bring it over since they forgot, they REFUSED! They said extra frosting is a "free" thing, so they could not deliver it, and I would have to delay my shoot (on work time!) to go pick it up myself. They only deliver on orders over $30 they said. BUT I HAD JUST SPENT OVER $100 on their cupcakes!!! And--- THEY were at fault for forgetting to bring it!! And, all this conversation with another VERY rude girl on the phone! I was pretty disgusted with them after that and will surely keep my business (and essentially free advertising through the book covers I work on!) to places that deserve it. And anyway--their cupcakes weren't awful, but truly nothing special....
- Cons: they were jerks!
Rude on the Phone

I had heard so many good things about Buttercup Bake Shop but I guess their business is so good that they can afford to offend and turn away potential customers.
It was my boyfriend's birthday and he wanted to personally bake a torte to bring into work. He burned it in the oven the night before and was upset. I called Buttercup Bakery first thing the next morning and explained the situation and that I wanted surprise him with 24 cupcakes delivered to his office that afternoon; which was only 4 blocks from the bakery. I was working outside of the city or I would have picked them up and delivered them myself. The worker was very rude to me on the phone and told me that she could not possibly get the cupcakes delivered today and hung up the phone. I was shocked and offended by the poor customer service.
I called Dessert Delivery instead and Joanne took great care of me on the phone. Although they were sold out of cupcakes Dessert Delivery had a beautiful chocolate cake delivered to his office complete with plates, napkins and a plastic knife to cut the cake all delivered by 1pm.... now that's what I call service. Call Dessert Delivery @ 212.838.5411 and tell Buttercup to keep their cupcakes.
Not the best cupcakes and cake
by foodnyclover at Citysearch
The cupcakes are not good at all and the cakes and dry, hard and heavy. The only thing the owner was smart to do was to promote her bakery. It's a place where thousands of people will try one time, believing the hype, spend money and she makes money. It is overrated, like a clique. I tried Magnolia a few years back, and loved it.
- Cons: Cupcakes and cakes are not that good
will satisfy your sweet tooth

Buttercup Bake shop is fantastic. They cakes and cupcakes are delicious and the icing is just heavenly. Their cakes are great for special occasions and everyone will ask where the cake came from. Definitely a great bakery!
- Pros: fantastic food
- Cons: crowded
best bakery in all of new york!
by nycupcake at Citysearch
Buttercup Bake Shop is the BEST bakery in all of New York City. The staff is so warm and welcoming, and the treats are outstanding. The treats are magic in your mouth. I have tried every bakery in the city and Buttercup beats them all hands down. Their cupcakes are incredible, (red velvet is the best), and their hummingbird cake is phenomenal. I love going to Buttercup. It is a great experience, and an even better treat for your taste buds!! Go and support Buttercup, you won't regret it!
- Pros: staff, cupcakes, cake, environment
