I had heard so many good things about Buttercup Bake Shop but I guess their business is so good that they can afford to offend and turn away potential customers. It was my boyfriend's birthday and he wanted to personally bake a torte to bring into work. He burned it in the oven the night before and was upset. I called Buttercup Bakery first thing the next morning and explained the situation and that I wanted surprise him with 24 cupcakes delivered to his office that afternoon; which was only 4 blocks from the bakery. I was working outside of the city or I would have picked them up and delivered them myself. The worker was very rude to me on the phone and told me that she could not possibly get the cupcakes delivered today and hung up the phone. I was shocked and offended by the poor customer service. I called Dessert Delivery instead and Joanne took great care of me on the phone. Although they were sold out of cupcakes Dessert Delivery had a beautiful chocolate cake delivered to his office complete with plates, napkins and a plastic knife to cut the cake all delivered by 1pm.... now that's what I call service. Call Dessert Delivery @ 212.838.5411 and tell Buttercup to keep their cupcakes.

The cupcakes are not good at all and the cakes and dry, hard and heavy. The only thing the owner was smart to do was to promote her bakery. It's a place where thousands of people will try one time, believing the hype, spend money and she makes money. It is overrated, like a clique. I tried Magnolia a few years back, and loved it.

Cons: Cupcakes and cakes are not that good

Buttercup Bake shop is fantastic. They cakes and cupcakes are delicious and the icing is just heavenly. Their cakes are great for special occasions and everyone will ask where the cake came from. Definitely a great bakery!

Pros: fantastic food

Cons: crowded

Buttercup Bake Shop is the BEST bakery in all of New York City. The staff is so warm and welcoming, and the treats are outstanding. The treats are magic in your mouth. I have tried every bakery in the city and Buttercup beats them all hands down. Their cupcakes are incredible, (red velvet is the best), and their hummingbird cake is phenomenal. I love going to Buttercup. It is a great experience, and an even better treat for your taste buds!! Go and support Buttercup, you won't regret it!

Pros: staff, cupcakes, cake, environment

I was so very disappointed. I purchased a dozen on my first visit here. Each one was dry. I couldn't believe they would even sell them in that condition. The icing did not allow me to see the cake part. I threw them out and will not recommend this shop to anyone. I stopped back in after my first visit with a friend. She too found them to be dry and did not eat it.

Every cupcake I have had from Buttercup (regardless of location) has been awful. The cake is dry and crumbly, to the point where you need something to wash it down with. The frosting is sweet, but lacks flavor. I cant even compare the frosting to the overly sugared, lard frosting you find in a classic bakery, which some people hate, but at least its standard. New Yorkers rave about this place, but I think its because they don't know how to bake thier own cupcakes.

Great little cupcakes in every sort of variety. Devil dogs (no creme in the middle though), vanilla, lemon cake you name it. Buttercup is a charming little bakery which reminds you of simpler times....in a good way.

The cupcakes were extremely dry almost like a cornbread consistency. The buttercream icing really lacked the butter flavor. I have to say that I think grocery store cupcakes are more moist and flavorful than Buttercups. Even my two little kids didn't even finish the cupcakes we bought at Buttercups.

I bought several different cupcakes to try and they were horrible. completely dry and stale and the icing colors were tacky and waaaayyyy too sweet. don't waste your time or money here. go to crumbs where you'll get consistently great cupcakes albeit being a bit pricier...

Amazing! MAYBE just a TAD too moist and tasty. But other than that, unbeatable. Man is to ape as Buttercup is to Magnolia.

Pros: not dry

Cons: too moist, too tasty
