The most aggressive and off-putting bartender

by irishlunatic

Never set foot in this pub, you've been warned!!!!

I have had the chance to frequent Murphy's Pub three or four times, each time enjoying the beer and french fries. However, the last time I was there the bartender's behavior was aggressive, cruel, unacceptable and inexcusable. He simply decided to kick my friend and I out because we did not rush to order a second round of drinks. After using every profanity one could come up with, we were shocked to see him call his cop friends, who all come there during their off-hours. They seemed disinterested and biased against us and told us that he can yell at us, curse at us, even physically hurt us if he wants to, which later on I found out is illegal to do. My friend and I did nothing to deserve this kind of discrimination and still got a warning from the police, all members of the 17th precinct. In short, just like the other blogger wrote, try to never set foot in that place, especially if you're background is anything other than Irish.

  • Pros: good price for beers
  • Cons: dangerous and aggressive bartender

makes midtown east less atrocious. even tolerable.

by kvvj80c

been coming with team cupcakes for a few years now. never gave the staff a good reason to befriend us, but they did. best group of people and personalities working, ever. good pints, burgers, wings, pickles and soup. great for watching live sporting events and the bridge and tunnel crowd on saturdays.

  • Pros: staff, food, happy hour, shift drinks.
  • Cons: no neighborhood parking until after 7.

Bartenders who scream at you? No thanks.

by kth201

Don't go here unless you want to get screamed at, and then not be served any beer.

I went to this bar on April 12th, and our night started off great -- we really enjoyed the music and the first bartender was nice. Unfortunately, he went off and another bartender started. When my friend went to buy a beer, the bartender asked for her ID. Apparently he didn't like her attitude because when she showed the ID to him, he began yelling at her and refused to serve her. I went to speak with the manager, and the bartender came out from behind the bar and began screaming at me. The manager didn't bother intervening -- he just let his employee yell at a customer while he stood idly by. Whatever issues they have had with IDs or underage drinking (which was our guess), there's no cause to yell at customers, even if you don't particularly like them. The manager didn't even bother apologizing. We left and spent our money elsewhere and I recommend you do the same.

There are much better bars in the area with much better staff.

  • Pros: Music
  • Cons: Horrible service and management

Great Place; Joe rules

by moboerl

Classic Irish Pub of yester-year. Joe the bartender a great conversationalist and the best listener. The nostolgic pictures, fresh beer; The chairs and glasses are always new; Tony the owner will always stop and say hello making you feel like a King. Thumbs up for Murphy's. I'm going back and they're better than ever. Character prevails. Oh yea; without question best burger in town!!!!! Guiness too!! Long live Murphy's!!

Great Bartender & Pretty Women

by robert100

I wandered in on a Wednesday night after leaving a couple of other pubs on the same strip which were too loud. Joe the bartender was great, the yankees were on and every hour or so a group of actually pretty women who worked in the area came in and included me in their group. Had a great time. They also serve a good corned beef sandwich

Average over-crowded Irish bar

by drink_club1

It was a special promotion: tiny glasses filled with Pilsner Urquell, plus a contest to win empty etched glasses. Most of us took home some glassware. BUT, the place was so crowded, and the backroom filled with a huge group that we had to leave It was just too tough to stand in the narrow section by the bar. From the looks of things, the place was a pretty ordinary bar, with somewhat of a pick up scene. Otherwise, it was completely ordinary, if too crowded. So we moved next door to Jamesons. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC Drinkers

Best staff and service ;-)

by bec_c

I live in UK and have visited family in New York twice in the last couple of years, Murphy's was their local. We visited several times on each trip. What can I say? The staff are great, really friendly therefore the atmosphere was too. My last visit was June 2006 and unfortunately I don't know when I will be able to visit again, but would reccommend Murphy's as the best pub I went in, definately, in fact one of the best pubs I've ever been in anywhere! :-)

  • Pros: Staff friendliness, atmosphere, jukebox, Magners Irish Cider!
  • Cons: Nil

Dinner is served at midtown's sweetest Irish pub.

by Contributor

The Scene
This sit-back-and-take-a-load-off pub has received a face-lift--starting with the shiny red exterior, distinguishing it from other Irish haunts along the row. And it deserves the distinction. Good-natured staff have a bit of blustery Irish wit, pressed tablecloths are protected by classic map-of-Ireland placemats, and the two-handed burgers are better than most. Soak in the old-fashioned charm.

The Draw
Every now and then someone puts in a quarter and the jukebox coughs up some tender Hank Williams. But mostly there's a familiar mix of classic rock with a steady stream of Van Morrison. From the guys discussing sports at the bar to the melted cheese on a plate of potato skins, Murphy's is simple, respectable and comforting. Families bring their kids for fish-and-chips and old friends reunite over creamy-headed Guinness, but, as staff will tell you full-brogue, no one needs a reason to find their way back.

Wonderful place!

by browntn

My two best mates and I spend New Years Eve in this pub and had the time of our life! The bartenders were the most friendly that I have ever come in contact with. The prices were fair and the general atmosphere was amazing! I would recommend this pub to anyone visiting NYC!

  • Pros: SERVICE, prices, atmosphere

Friendliest Bartenders and crowd

by julietjan

Best feeling bar I have been in for this mostly impersonal city. I felt like I was in Cheers. Bar food is rated best ever.
