Best Restaurant Experience Ever!
by gerardiux
Absolutely my favored restaurant in the city. Service, Decor, Atmosphere, Food, presentattion, Wine, everything top noth! Also the portions are excellent.
Jean George is the King of New York Chefs!
- Pros: Mind blowing Experience
- Cons: Can only go once in a while
Surprisingly uneven
by tbrax
I had not eaten at JG in several years and was looking forward to my recent visit tremendously. I was, disappointingly, underwhelmed by the evening. There were unquestionable high points: the broth on the black sea bass was extraordinary, and the turbot was also very very good. The amuse bouche featured a duck confit with a ravioli that was outstanding.
But the meal as a whole was disappointinly uneven, and just as there were high points there were low points. The crispy rabbit was, in essence, a rabbit mcnugget. Even the very good sauce with it didn't make the dish appealing. Several of the desserts were disasters: the deep fried pumpkin pie on the "spice" dessert menu was so heavily salted as to be inedible and the pastry under the apple tart was dense and mushy.
At this price point and given the restaurant's reputation I had expected much better.
- Pros: Creativity
- Cons: Lack of Consistency
Good but not Great, more like Michelin 2-star
by calchung
I dined here back in Sept. Service was attentive but I was very disappointed when a hair is attached to the bread. Staff just replaced it without apology, a Michelin 3-star should do better than this. The food tasted good but not consistently excellent. Other than the Egg Caviar, presentation of plates was simple, not artistic or creative enough. Soup was flavorful but salty. Very Good Scallops though. Lobster was tender but lack texture of freshness. Squab was over-cook not med-rare as it should. Excellent dessert though. Seating was not as comfortable as cushion needs replacement. Very good wine list and knowledgeable staff. I'd rate JG overall a B+. I felt this is a Michelin 2-star, not as memorable as my 3-star experience else where. Better value to dine in the main area at Nougatine
- Pros: Wine, dessert
- Cons: no apology after hair is found in food
One of the great restaurants in the world
by Scoop NYC
I can't really add much to the superlatives about the food. It's wonderful. So I'll focus instead on two points that aren't often addressed in reviews I've read.
First, despite the high overall costs, this restaurant is quite a value. The $98 dollar menu brings four courses rather than the usual three and all of them are good sized. That might not matter much to small women but for a large man like me, it's nice not to walk out of a big dinner feeling hungry.
Second, the chairs are really comfortable. This may sound like a minor point, but it's not. When you're settling in for what can easily be a three-hour meal, you can only enjoy it if you're comfy. A shocking number of top dining spots don't seem to understand this.
My one critique: The decoration in the dining room is beginning to look both warn and dated. It's probably time for a refresh.
- Pros: Incredible food, excellent service, great value
- Cons: decor beginning to look worn
Delicious, but Crowded Feeling
by misstikki
Had lunch at Nougatine during the week with a group of 4. The service and food was very good. The fish dishes (appetizers and entrees) were fresh and delicious. We enjoyed the $26 lunch deal, which entailed two entree/appetizer choices and a dessert. One appealing factor was that you can pick two entrees in the deal vs. the typical appetizer and entree. The portions were on the medium to small side, but well cooked. My only qualm is that the table spacing is very limited. It felt very crowded (like we were on top of one another) and you could hear everyone's conversation (i.e. noisy). Not recommended for a romantic meal.
- Pros: excellent food, good lunch deal, nice service
- Cons: poor table spacing caused very crowded feeling
CONSISTENTLY AMAZING
by NOEL
The greeting is warm + friendly. The room is exqusitely chic, yet understated enough and not glitzy AND you can have a conversation. The setting along Central Park is un-rivalled. The food is consistently divine: superb produce, creatively combined, yet never over-done or weird. The service is impeccable. And all of this happens day after day, year after year, and doesn't look tired. AND the pricing is actually reasonable when compared to many other over-bloated imitators. Quite an amazing feat.
- Pros: Consistency, real value.
- Cons: It is not next door to my home.
Hype. Go elsewhere
by LeeLee74
OK- Maybe it was a bad night BUT my husband and I went here a few months back for his birthday and we were highly disappointed. Not sure what the big whoop is about this place. First the carpet needs to be changed like yesterday Secondly the decor is boring with a capital B. The food was average, not what you expect from a Michelin rated restaurant. The wait staff is average, apparently not trained the real art of fine dining. The experience was average and we will not return, especially for those prices. Trust me, go elsewhere.
- Pros: Near Columbus and Central Park
- Cons: everything else. sorry.
At Best Average all around.... AT BEST AVERAGE
by utafrog
The Food was okay, nothing great. Not a single dish was amazing. Some of the dish was extremely sour. The dessert they serve had a red sauce that was extremely sweet not even edible. The waiters were nice but we were seated next to the kitchen, which was extremely hot around the area. We request if we can be moved further from the kitchen. No seats were available, which I can understand. But once a seat open up they should have given us one of those seat; that just poor service.
- Pros: if you to spend money on okay food.
- Cons: Nothing Special... Save ur money for some place else..
Excellent
by Hartjaeger
Although the ambience is a little bland, the food is anything but--every course was creative, surprising, thoughtful and well executed. The service was attentive but not intrusive. Quite an enjoyable experience.
- Pros: Food, service
- Cons: Ambience
