Good Movies Bad Service

by allwet

I left my umbrella in a drink holder and left the theater at

the end of the credits. As soon as I walked off the escalator I realized my mistake. When I went back instead

the fellow who did the cleaning was already finished.

I asked him about my blue umbrella. He responded incredulously, "Blue?" I said it was black with a blue sky lining. He then told me he knew where I'd been sitting

(maybe cause that's where he found the umbrella?)

He went inside the lost and found and gave me someone else's umbrella to use instead. Nice gesture, and maybe he was just embarassed to admit he'd taken it. The manager told me to call and see if it showed up.

And I went back in person to see if it did, and the cleaner asked me why I'd come back. I was hoping if he looked me in the eye, he might "magically" go back and discover the umbrella.

I've made this a long story, when the long and short of it is. These are not nice or honest people. And I'd rather use netflix then give these people more of my money.

Don't go!

then I will skip it

by LexAve

Some time ago, I used to go a lot.

However, if, according to a lot of reviewers, the atmosphere has gone down hill, and they have hired a lot of rude staff, forget it. I'm not even going to try it.

There is no way I am going to risk it.

Upper West side independent or interantional film fares

by Dilettante

Because of this cinema I can see some foreign movies, some acclaimed with awards, some not yet, but always by talented movie makers, established or raising. They never disappoint me with its choices of movies over the years. Would recommend.

  • Pros: good movie selecttion, good movie review pane
  • Cons: no credit card at the ticket box

Rude and Ruder

by cityat

Add me to the list of those who have suffered at the hands of rude staff. As I read the other reviews, I recalled a recent indecent where I had rested my foot on a low to the ground table in the lobby. A dower faced senior, swatted me on the shoulder and waved his hand in the direction of my foot, then walked away without a word. It was minor, but I remember first feeling apologetic, and then realizing how unpleasent the guy had been. I felt like a homeless person being accosted by a transit cop. Odd experience for the lobby of an art-house theater.

upper west side

by DG130

I was on Sunday April 06 08? at theater and the lady in front of me bough drinks and food. She wanted few things and asked questions?nothing out of the ordinary.

However, the person at the desk was like? you start pissing me off?? and so on.

When I walked in side of the theater room, it was so smelly (you get a BIG wave of smell?a really bad one!).

Of course when I bought the ticket ?the lady at the desk did not listening to my question which was: if the theater was full, because I can?t sit in the front row. She just repeated the same sentence over and over again, till I gave up. And the manger?why is he there exactly for????oyyy!!

OOO AND WHY THE ONLY WAY TO PAY IS IN CASH???!!!

It was very hard to see the movie after all of this. Not relaxing and fun experience for sure? but in the upper west side it has the best movies- so we keep going back to the same place.

Manager is rude and abusive!!!

by MovieMax

I used to enjoy this theater. When I'm venturing out of downtown and looking for a quality movie this was the first stop. But this week I had the most bizarre encounter with a young lady behind the counter who shortchanged me on coffee. (gave me $1.50 instead of $3.50) And then refused to accept that even when I emptyed my pocket of everything but her change. The when I complained to the "Manager" he called me an "idiot". I was completely astounded. The ushers and the other moviegoers just shook their heads. This guy is a wacko. Stay away!!!!!!

Rudest staff in Manhattan

by RandyRummler

I have read bad things about the staff at this theater but ran across it first hand when I answered a cell phone call in the lobby (not the theater). Although by the time I was accosted by the staff and even though I was indicating I was about to hang up, I was still being yelled at "you must get off the phone now!" as if my call was creating a huge distrubance. I felt if I didn't hang up immediately I was ready to be physically accosted. If the theater wants to have a policy of no cell phone use in the lobby, I suppose that is their right-although it is absurd as there is no difference in talking to a friend in the lobby or taking to a friend on a cell phone in the lobby-however I was clearly not disturbing anyone. The phone call was 95% me listening anyway. To treat me like a criminal and that my actions were placing the free world at risk rather than simply allow me to end the call and ask in the future that I respect their policy was absurd. When I asked to speak to manager I was escorted around the corner and found an equally rude individual. When I asked for his name he told me he was "Aleem' and asked sarcastically "should I be worried about my job.? Apparently he feels secure about his position-as an employer if I had an employee who went out of his way to antagonize a customer I would fire him immediately. He then followed us out the movie theater as we left, perhaps using a cell phone 100 ft from this movie theater is also forbidden. At any rate, we will not be returning to this movie theater-apparently this staff feels that since the theater shows "prestigous" films it gives them the right to treat patrons like garbage. This along with the lousy concessions and tiny seats should make this a movie theater that is to be avoided.

  • Pros: Movie selection
  • Cons: Very rude staff, lousy concessions, uncomfortable seats

A premier alternative destination in the heart of Gotham, showcasing popular art-house fare.

by Contributor

The Scene
While the tiny screening rooms are often overcrowded, the location's great, close to both Lincoln Center and the Sony Lincoln Square theaters (in case you feel like catching "Big Momma's House" after seeing "East-West"). And the devoted staff is a big help in these days of clueless ushers and automated projection. Sadly, the audiences here--often made up of irritable cine-snobs and misanthropic cranks packed tightly together due to the sardine-style seating plan--can get pretty abusive. (Some, of course, might consider this part of the place's charm.)

The Draw
The films are nothing too fringe, please, but if it's Best Foreign Film Oscar-nominees you want, you've come to the right place. Many of the same foreign and independent films shown at the Angelika downtown make their uptown appearances here, often for longer runs. Fresh popcorn and gourmet sandwiches make for good munchies, but the dry cookies aren't big crowd-pleasers.

worst customer service

by barem

my friend and i got to the box office one hour before showtime, but the computer was down, so we were asked to come back later to buy tickets. we came back about an hour later. 5 minutes past showtime. they had just turned the lights off in the box office and refused to sell us tickets.

reasonable that tickets can't be sold once the box office closes, but there's no excuse for a rude attendant.

needless to say, i won't be going back to this theatre. landmark sunshine cinema is MUCH better.

Absolute average

by ihaveseenenough

Everything about this place is just average. The screens aren't tiny, but definitely aren't big. The seats aren't uncomfortable, but aren't cushy either. The restrooms aren't filthy, but aren't quite clean. The atmosphere isn't bad, but the place is very very grey and drab. Either way, it's a way to avoid the Angelika, and I'm all for it.

The staff isn't terribly friendly, and the concession stand is nothing special either (although PLEASE avoid the salmon sandwiches- my friend tried it as an (unsuccessful) experiment). Thumbs up to the film selection here. Even though it sometimes duplicates the Angelika, they book some really good films here (Fat Girl).

Like I said, just an average movie house. You won't notice anything wrong, but you won't remember ths place once you leave.

  • Pros: Film selection, Location
  • Cons: Somewhat dirty, Indifferent staff
