Stellar Ma & Pa Mexican Food
by hawaiianfoxx
At first when I used to go there I thought it was a bit over-priced. However, it is all fresh and c'mon it's NYC, of course it's gonna cost a 'lil extra.
The mole is great, the vegetables and spinach is fresh, and the portions always fill me up.
I feel comfortable dining there alone, and the staff is friendly.
When I go I order 1 chicken mole enchilada and 1 verde chicken enchilada. They are two seperate dishes, but they are nice, so they combine it if you ask.
It's worth checking out at least once!
- Pros: Yummy Mexican food (and I'm from AZ)
- Cons: I always wish they would provide more chips when I dine in
People who say NYC has no good Mexican food should try this place!

I've lived on the Upper West Side for twenty years, and this is one of my favorite neighborhood places. A real gem. Nothing fancy - order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. Complimentary chips & salsa (all 3 types are great). Delicious, giant burritos with pink or black beans (served with rice inside). Try the mouth-watering enchiladas verdes - just the right spiciness. Really good mole sauce also. Excellent changing daily specials can include tamales or huaraches. The tortilla soup is good. Friendly, quick service. Price is right, especially considering the nabe.
- Pros: flavorful food; good, friendly service
- Cons: not many tables
Best california mexican food in NYC
by gfender
Don't judge a book by it's cover. At first I thought the name of this place sounded like another east coast attempt at good Mexican food but after visiting this homey restaurant on the UWS I was immediately sold. The fresh, homemade tortilla chips are incredibly good and they are served with your choice of mild, medium or hot salsa which hits the spot. The salsa is spicy and delicious which has been hard to find in NY since everything seems to be mild. I highly recommend the enchiladas verdes! Their verde sauce reminds me of the 19 years I spent living and growing up in San Diego and brought me straight back. The rice and beans are tasty as well and definitely worth the $12 for the whole enchilada plate. I will definitely be coming back many times to this sweet Mexican spot and I highly recommend it to anyone with a hunger for some good, traditional Mexican food.
- Pros: Fast service, homemade chips, delicious salsa and incredible food
- Cons: none
All hail the Great Burrito

This is the best little Mexican place you will never hear about, but more people should know it. While it's a small place with not much ambiance, the food, especially the namesake burrito, is actually great. It's one of the rare examples of truth in advertising, a restaurant that lives up to its name. If the lack of dining atmosphere is a problem for you, have them deliver. They are always prompt and efficient.
- Pros: Food, Service
- Cons: Lacking in ambiance for those who care
Yummy Mexican Comfort Food
by feedmenyc
This is a great Mexican place. I have to say it's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, even compared to CA. It's surrounded by all sorts of posh restaurants, but I usually find myself wandering in. It just smells so good. I tend to order the special, and it's always tasty and I leave happy. You see a lot of families in here, and it's easy to see why. The food is appealing and unpretentious and delicious. The staff take good care of you, and you can tell they take pride in what they're cooking up.
By far my favorite Mexican Restaurant in the UWS
by imansingh
Great food. I love it because I rarely cook and it is a perfect place for dining alone (also great for dining with company, of course). Great value. It's really exceptionally good.
- Pros: Great food, Great value
- Cons: May not impress date
It's all about the burrito

Don't go for the ambience (it's lacking). The burritos are great. I like them better than Burritoville. I'd keep the ordering simple-burrito or burrito. The staff is really friendly too.
Authentic Down Home

This is the real deal. If your main priorities are taste and value, go here. If you are more into ambiance and fluffy banter, don't go here. Anything on the menu is guaranteed to be good. It's my favorite place on the otherwise stuffy West Side restuarant scene. The food is fresh and very tasty. It has sparse surroundings and is just a hole in the wall, but that just adds to the rustic charm of the place.
Inexpensive and tasty

Great, cheap burrito & taco joint that is actually run by Mexicans. Skip the "regular" meat choices (grilled chicken, etc) and go straight for the chicken mole or pork tinga. The veggie tacos are quite tasty too.
