Great Diner Food

My boyfriend and I frequent City Diner for their 24/7 breakfasts. We are fans of their eggs and bacon: I've never had them overcook my eggs and the bacon is always crispy. Their pancakes, waffles and french toast are also really good. Their burgers are really big and cooked to order. The fries are thick , crispy golden steak fries. One of my favorite menu items, though, is their milkshake. They are made with Haagen-Dazs and are really thick and creamy.
I wouldn't go as far as saying we've had poor service or that the servers are rude; our water glasses get refilled and they check on us to make sure we have everything we need. Their portions are generous. Overall, this is a diner, so don't expect white tablecloth, Michelin star dining, but what a diner is supposed to do, City Diner does very well.
- Pros: big portions, proximity to my house :)
- Cons: can get crowded
I love this place and come here all the time
by Nicoole at Citysearch
I am so surprised that some people were not satisfied with the service and the food at this place! I live right near here and this was actually the first place I ate when I moved here. I have never had a bad meal here and I have never had a problem with the service- and I come here all the time (I eat here, I pick up food here, I have it delivered). Sunday brunch time gets very, very crowded... but this is understandable... the challah french toast, pancakes, waffles (esp. the multigrain waffle! and tutti frutti), bagel and lox platter are all amazing. I mean it's a diner so don't come here with zagat expectations, but it fills the need. I was recently at a diner in midtown and was shocked when I was told that I couldn't order pancakes after 11. City diner has everything you could want at a diner, 24/7. I don't know what I would do without this place.
A daytime drama of the real Hollywood movie that is diner food

Complete tourist trap and why not...it looks respectable, has the appearance of a city diner, and christ its called "City Diner" so this is what the typical City diner is right.?...wrong.
The food is mediocre and when you factor in the price (which is approximately 3 times more than other places that do it better)...this place is a complete stinker.
The service was completely awful...I sat at the counter. The server would not even give me a spoon to sitr my coffee. I had to ask the hostess for my check, because the 3 times I asked the server got me nowhere.
Do yourself a favor and stay away or own up to what you are...a tourist living in ny.
- Pros: It is called City Diner
- Cons: mediocre food, terrible service, and high pricing
great for a diner
by silverdragonia at Citysearch
The service the first time I went was great. It was disappointing that on my second visit, the service was not consistent. I'd defnitely suggest going to City Diner if you're in the area and looking for a quick meal. The ambience is nice, with a real diner feel to the place, and the menu is quite extensive. The squash soup was definitely worth another go. The pasta was pretty good, I had linguine and spaghetti.
- Pros: extensive menu, polite staff, ambience, 24 hours
- Cons: service was not consistant
Good Diner, but watch the bill!
by yivich at Citysearch
We live a few blocks from this diner and have eaten there several times, the food is big, good-enough Diner Food at a decent price. Every time we've had delivery from them, though, the bill is never right, they charge $1-5 more than the menu prices. When we complained they said there was a $.75 "plate fee" which isn't on the menu, but we had only ordered 2 meals and they overcharged us by $3.00. The food's good, delivery is quick, but CHECK YOUR BILL!
- Pros: Big portions, fast delivery, good Diner Food
- Cons: Overcharged a few too many times on deliveries
Not your best option
by winnieholden at Citysearch
On the bright side, our server was polite and friendly, definitely the best aspect of the establishment. From the street, where we were weary of walking, the Diner looked like just what we wanted-- clean, air-conditioned, spacious. We ordered a turkey burger and a turkey sandwich. Both were bland and undistinguished. It didn't seem worth the money or the calories. It might be good when you're desperate at 3 AM, but for lunch or dinner you can do better.
- Pros: Friendly
- Cons: Overpricecd and bland
Quick and to the point
by blossominbeauty at Citysearch
The menu is extensive, there's a large selection of breakfast, lunch, dinner and desert. The service was fast and friendly and the place was quiet with a definite mix crowd. Definitely a good place if your looking for a late night meal with a date, friends or family.
It's a Diner, for Goodness Sake!

My partner and I are in the city to apartment-sit on the UWS 3-4 times/year. We end up at City Diner most nights 3AMish. With 30+ visits in last 4 years we've never been treated badly, never been rushed, never been dissapointed. Food is always generous, well-cooked, and satisfies that 3AM comfort food craving. The big burgers are soul-satifying, Buffulo Burger is almost healthy. Club sandwich is great. Tuna/chicken salad, good. Egg salad? Wonderful--one of the few places I order it. Soups are homemade and good. The fries are too good not to eat, unfortunately.
Amibience-wise, it's brightly-lit and deco. Cleaner than your avg NY diner. Great people watching at lunch and late night--short story fodder for writers. Only annoyance is the ocassional noisy gathering of tragically hip UWS 20-somethings. A few order food, the rest just coffee, or nothing--even so, they're largely tolerated by management.
- Pros: Always Open, Good Food, Prompt service
- Cons: Flourescent Lights
