A welcome respite from the fratty and frantic drinking scene that pervades the Upper West Side.

My fav UWS Irish Pub

by pammynyc

I love McAleers! Great local pub! Actually the oldest authentic Irish Pub on the UWS. There are alway neighbor locals, young and old, tourists, a good mix come here for the delicious reliable pub grub, wings, burgers, esp the sw burger, yum! Great beer selection and they serve a very good brunch on Sundays. Why wait in the cold outside Sarabeth's for hours ?? A Plus, the charming owner, Keith McAleer has done a great job in keeping up with the times and the ever changing neighborhood all these years.!

  • Pros: good pub food, beer, friendly staff, + Keith McAleer
  • Cons: bathroom needs renovation

Better than ever.

by heynow11

I've been coming here to Mac's for some time now and I must say it's better than ever. The staff is cool and the food and atmosphere is outstanding.

Keith McAleer, the owner, has done a great job of maintaining a neighborhood pub in an area of constant change.

Love the wings special

by muffinsgalore

I'm a newcomer to the Upper West Side and stumbled upon Mac's one Friday night. The place just feels comfortable to me. The food is good and the staff is friendly. The wings special they have is the best in NYC. Where else can you get a free double order of wings with the purchase of 2 pitchers of beer.

  • Pros: very comfortable
  • Cons: none

Real Gem in UWS

by soYeah22

I really love this bar. I come in at least once a week with friends and have been doing so for a few months now. I doesn't matter if we sit at the bar or a table we get good service and 100% of the time are recongnized. Cool thing about the staff, they actually seem to be friends.

I love love love the southwest burger!! And they have magners cider, which I love.

Not as crazy as the otehr places in the area but when i do come in on fri night its always a blast, good music.

BIG PLUS*** Smoking on the patio****

  • Pros: big menu, patio
  • Cons: hmmm... i cant think of any really

Worst Bartenders on the Upper West Side

by laura2006

Still cannot believe it. I went into this bar with 10 friends when it was definitely not busy. All 10 of my friends ordered and one of them got 2 pitchers which we were sharing. One my friends and I wanted water, so I tried to order. I waited patiently for a few minutes to even be waited on. When I finally was, I asked for 2 waters. Then the male bartender continued to serve a whole bunch of people, but no water for me. After 10 minutes I was super annoyed, watching him drink and mess around behind the bar. I told the female bartender I'd been waiting for 10 minutes for water. She shrugged me off and continued to wait on others. Finally, I was like "Excuse me, but I've been waiting over 10 minutes for water. Can I get it?". Then she very rudely says "It's just water. It's not even a paid drink". At which point I told her off - especially since I was holding a tip for the water in my hand! She called the bouncer over (who was pretty nice about the whole thing - only reasonable person on the staff) and had me kicked out, so my entire party left. If I was the manager - I'd fire both bartenders. My friends and I were celebrating a b-day and were spending a lot of money. They lost hundreds of dollars, just because they didn't want to serve water. Since there are so many other bars and much better service - go someplace else. The people at this bar don't care about you. You will get served faster at Gin Mill or Jake's Dilemna, even when they are packed.

  • Pros: Bouncer was a nice guy
  • Cons: Horrible bartenders, terrrible, rude service

Best burger I've had in nyc (or anywhere) in a long time.

by georgelina

Lived around the corner for eons, heard good things about it, drank there a few times - but until I had a burger I had no idea! Even on an off night, they are pretty good. But when they are great, they are very very great.

  • Pros: Not fancy

Great wraps and salads

by jessjgirl

McAleer's doesn't fit into the typical greasy pub fare department. Granted, they have their fair share of deep fried goodies. However, they have fantastic wraps and salads for my taste that rival anyplace. My boyfriend and I usually stop by Saturday nights for a bite after the movies or whatever.

I heard it's been around since the 50's and that seems quite a feat in these parts. Keep on rockin' McAleer's and keep doing what your doing.

  • Pros: Food-staff
  • Cons: One ladies toilet.
