An awe-inspiring landmark that's been a magnificent work in progress since 1892.

Overview
When it's completed, St. John the Divine will be the largest cathedral in the world. Widely known throughout the city for celebrating the relationship between the sacred and the arts, this Episcopalian cathedral is also a temple of craftsmanship with gorgeous stained-glass windows and various impressive displays along the ambulatory. Visitors come to pray, light a candle, worship or tour the structure's magnificent ambulatory and chapels. Whatever the reason behind your visit, you're bound to be filled with awe and reverence once inside.
Facts
A fire in the gift shop on December 18, 2001, damaged a significant portion of the unfinished north transept and two of 12 17th-century Barberini tapestries, but services (both on the altar and in the gift shop) have since resumed.
Magical

Growing up near the Cathedral, and participating in some of it's ceremonies, I can say that not only is the Cathedral itself magnificent, but the grounds are just as magical. It is a sanctuary in the middle of an urban jungle. With it supporting buildings just as architectually detailed and the peacocks walking around the grounds, it truely is an oasis.

God is in the details. No where could that be more true than here at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.

American Indian Thanksgiving Service

This is a special event held every year. We stumbled on a notice of it during a bus tour and came back. Very spiritual and very moving.
Hallelujah!

St. John the Divine is a cultural mish-mash of art, music and poetry. The church itself is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world rivaling any in europe.
The Glory of St. John!

This magnificent cathedral is a must see for all that come to NYC. In addition to the regular Sunday services, there all many unique culturally & musically inspired programs held here. After a tragic fire in 2001, the famous gift shop operated by
the Cathedral in currently being reconstructed. So the patronage of all is definitely welcome & well worth it. A more beautiful & community oriented cathedral can not be found!

This church demands reverance. It is so massive and stately. A true marvel right in the middle of the city.
Absolutely Magnificent

Stunning and gorgeous! You must see a concert there. I saw a chamber music festival there once and was in absolute rapture, even though I am not affiliated with the Church in any way. Or if that's not your thing, just go for the complete shock of entering from the street, it's like you've crossed over into a completely different time and place.
Big and Beautiful

Not only will this be the world's largest cathedral when it's completed (if it ever is), it will also be the last one to be constructed with traditional methods. Look at the fascinating statuary around the main doors, it was all carved by local students who trained at the stone-carving workshop at the cathedral. Even in its unfinished state, the space inside the cathedral is awesome. I think you could probably fit St. Patrick's whole inside the main sanctuary. Go when there's an organ concert on, the music reverberates for minutes at a time.
