A great base for painting the town red on a budget.

The Scene
If luxury is what you're after, this Upper West Side hostel is not the place. But if you're seeking affordable accommodation, and if you can forego some comfort for cleanliness--almost to the point of being sterile--then you have arrived. This property sits in a great location for exploring the city.

The Details
Formerly a hospital, the brick building offers 640 beds. Most are dormitory style, although there are some private rooms available, too. Despite the frill-less atmosphere, there are enough amenities to keep a hosteller satisfied, including a TV room, a game room and a coffee bar. There is even a souvenir shop selling everything from postcards to travel gear to the ubiquitous "I Love New York" T-shirts. When the weather is nice, you can lounge in the courtyard. Or sit at one of the sidewalk picnic tables and watch the city strollers go by.
