Rude Management

by GemNYC

After encountering a problem with the restaurant, I asked to speak to the manager to resolve the problem. She was rude, unprofessional, and told me she didn't care about the fact she was breaking a law because she needed to pay rent. I refuse to give this type of establishment my business.

Not worth the price

by hannaruth

We were guests at a birthday brunch for 50 people on Sunday. It was called for 11 am but except for cocktails, there was no sign of food till noon. We were quite hungry by then. The buffet table was ample but the dour people standing behind it (two men who looked like they belonged to the Mafia) glared if you took time deciding what to select. They also didn't allow us to help ourselves. The poached salmon and couscous were good but the quiche was undercooked and runny, as were the made-to-order omelets. When I asked for a cup of tea during the meal, I was told it wouldn't be served until dessert time. I have never before encountered a restaurant that refused to serve a hot drink during a meal! Finally when the fancy but tasteless desserts were served, there were 2 small urns for coffee and a pitcher of pre-brewed, not-very-hot tea. And when my friend wanted another cup of coffee, the table and urns had disappeared well before 3 pm when the event was to conclude. I can't believe that this restaurant charges such high prices for such terrible service. I'll never go there again, even as a guest.

  • Pros: beautiful view

Great Place

by alexnewyork

Went there last night for the first time and it was a great place. We went on a Tuesday night the and terrace was not busy so me a my girlfriend got a table right by the edge. I personally feel that Terrace in the Sky is probably one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC. I went with the regular menu and everything was cooked well and the ingredients were awesome. If you plan on going try the calamantra pasta, it had the most unbelievable shrimp. The waiter was very professional and made the experience so much better, gave good recommendations and provided world class service. Definitely would recommend it to any couple.

Not recommended for restaurant week

by martyna2009

I went there with my husband for restaurant week lunch hoping for the great view people talk about. Turned out the deck was not available and we ended up in an ancient greenhouse overlooking the roofs of Harlem. The food was terrible. It started out okay with appetizers but my entree was absolutely horrible. The fish was undercooked and all tasted like olive brine. After complaining I was offered another meal. I picked risotto which was surprisingly worse. Even the fruit tart was so stale that you were unable to cut it with the fork. All together I didn't eat anything and left hungry short $60. Overall the worst restaurant experience in my life.

Mixed Review as a Wedding Venue

by UptownMom

Hands down, the view is gorgeous. Let me get that out of the way first because it was the big selling point, the wow factor of our wedding, and really made the whole night "magical." BUT, the planning process was nerve racking. They are very laissez faire about details and it becomes hard to pin them down on specifics. For example, I was told that there was a spare apt. in the building underneath (it is the top floor of student housing for Columbia) for the bridal party to change. More like a tiny little room with a bathroom (I had 12 people in my bridal party--7 bridesmaids, my maid of honor/flower girl, 4 hostesses and me) and it was a disaster. Not sure all the hors d'ouevres were ever served. They tried to charge a $4 pp cake cutting fee (which we simply refused to pay) and basically were completely unprepared on the day of. Several things I had asked for were not done, and on the day of the wedding, the event coordinator turned out to be someone I had never met before in my life. The person I had been regularly communicating with was nowhere to be found, and never mentioned anyone else would be there. This, of course, is all from a bride's perspective, one who had carefully planned out all the details of her wedding. To my guests, the venue was nothing short of amazing, so...you may be stressed out, but your guests will be in awe.

  • Pros: Beautiful view, indoors and out, good food,
  • Cons: A little too lacking in service for such a high price

Don't ask for the prix fixe menu!

by greengarnet

A group of us were celebrating a birthday and looking forward to fabulous views and fine dining. A couple of us had checked the website beforehand and noted the prix fixe dinner for $45. When we inquired we were first told there was no prix fixe, then we were told that it was $55, and then we were told that it only included "chicken" (uttered in disgust) and not the other items mentioned on the website. We chose a bottle of white wine from the wine list for $36 and enjoyed it enough to ask for another. We were then told that there was a "mistake" on the wine list and were shown the same page but with the $36 crossed out and $45 written in. They said they would charge us the lower price for the first bottle but that they would charge the higher "correct" price for a second bottle! As far as the food was concerned, the asparagus appetizer was okay, but the guinea hen I ordered at $36 for the entree was beyond overcooked and inedible. However, two of our group enjoyed their fish, and the blueberry cobbler was pretty good.

Oh yeah, gorgeous views. But the disdain that I felt from the staff after we inquired about the prix fixe dinner was unsettling. With "prices in the sky" at Terrace in the Sky one expects hospitable and attentive service and exceptional food - not the overpriced, mediocre food served by snobs. I don't know what happened to Terrace in the several years since I was last there (and had nice dining experiences), but I'm not going back.

  • Pros: nice view
  • Cons: switcheroos on menu prices, snobbish service, overpriced mediocre food

Ludicrous for such an established place

by jiminycricketoo

We had a tiny wedding scheduled for Saturday June 14th and from the beginning had communication problems with their event planner. We paid for 1/2 hour of passed hors'deouvres (6 hot, 4 cold) and we didn't get all of them - we were supposed to have wait staff for the drinks - it took my husband 15 minutes to track someone down to get him a cocktail. The food was good - however, I thought a wedding cake was included and we never saw one!. The air conditioning was not on for part of the time, my daughter had to ask them to keep it on, it was so muggy in the Greenhouse room. It was NOT a great experience and we would not reccomend having an event there.

  • Pros: The views are among the best in the City
  • Cons: The service is awful and the indifference unconscionable

Worst Customer Service

by jwagner010

Having lived in New York City for 10 years and a person who regularly dines out, this is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in New York. This place is completely over rated. We arrived for our 7pm reservation exactly on time. The restaurant was not set up and wasn't even seating. We stood there with 15 other guests while they set the tables. No one came over to explain or apologize. We all stood there wondering what was going on. You would have thought they would have offered people a drink while we waited; even a glass of water given it was such a hot day, but nothing, not even an explanation. There was a wedding in the room next door and the music and PA was blasting through the public restaurant. To cap it off, it was my wife's birthday and I had called in and requested a table with a nice view, which I was told they would honor. Even though tables were available they sat us in the middle of the room. When I asked for a better table, I was told 'you get what we have'. Needless to say, we got up and left. No one even bothered to ask why we were leaving or what the problem was as we left. I have never written a review online before but felt compelled to let people know about this terrible place, especially given it is up town and you don?t have many options if you leave. I am happy to say we got a table at Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental hotel at Time Warner Center. There was no comparison - the food was amazing, service outstanding and the views were even better. My tip is go there, not the Terrace/Dump in the Sky.

  • Pros: Great Website and Marketing
  • Cons: Worst Customer Service and out dated decor

Old World Manhattan Restaurant

by at_rag

I highly recommend this restaurant but first you must be ready for a few things. This is old world restaurant....romantic because the views are amazing. Not since the Windows of the World have I felt the pure extent of the Manhattan skyline. It is more intimate since you feel slightly hovered above New York City. The wait staff is attentive but not annoying. There is something cheesy about the place but that is what makes it great. Not cheap but well worth the experience. This is a good place to go if you want the opposite of trendy.

  • Pros: An experiance
  • Cons: expensive
