Romantic and Elegant

This restaurant is somewhat nondescript from the street and you're hard pressed to find the sign bearing it's name. Upon entering the first impression is that it's cramped and slightly 'rabbit-warren-ey.' But we were shown to the first floor back room dining area that was quite comfortable and romantic.

We were there on a Saturday night during a very severe thunderstorm. Unfortunately for the owners, the weather kept most diners at home and we shared the cozy room with only two other couples. Fortunately for us, it made for excellent service and a laughing camaraderie in the dining room every time thunder struck.

The food was quite tasty with well cooked meat dishes served with tasty sauces and accompanied by good wine and a genial atmosphere. Apart from the trickiness of finding the place, it's frustrating that the restaurant's web site gives virtually no information, not even a menu. But what awaits is far better than what was expected. We'd like to have dinner there again, hopefully in better weather, and would definitely like to try the afternoon tea!

Do Not go

My husband & I were given a g/c to Kings Carriage House (we were told the restaurant was "holding it for us")

The food was decent-menu was too limited-desert was nothing special. We went to pay using our g/c and were told they could not honor it as it was NOT THE ORIGINAL and of course they couldn't get in touch with the owner to find the g/c they had on file (typical NY story). We found the staff less then courteous and would not recommend this restaurant.

PS our friend called today to talk to the owner and once again he is not there

Beautiful atmosphere, excellent food, superb service

I chose Kings? Carriage House for my husband?s 50th birthday party as we had dined there a few times and enjoyed the food and unique atmosphere. Paul, Elizabeth, and Sammy were very helpful during the planning process - in selecting the menu, wines, and the arrangement of tables, etc. for our eighteen guests. On the evening of the party everything was perfect. The food was excellent - hors d?oeuvres were plentiful and delicious as were the other courses. The staff was professional, accommodating, and friendly (a special meal was prepared for our young daughter, on whom they doted). Everything was timed perfectly including the presentation of the birthday cake (which was also delectable). The party was in the upstairs (Mandalay) room which is lovely and authentic in feel, and each table was beautifully appointed with bowls of roses, votive and taper candles, and fine flatware. Our friends, a sophisticated group comprised of people from around the country and New York, could not stop raving about the evening. My husband was thrilled, as was I. It was an extremely memorable occasion at an exceptional place.

Surprisingly bad!

We walked past this adorable spot for years, always intending to have dinner. We finally did. And it was surprisingly bad - on a Saturday night no less. The service was about what you'd expect at a neighborhood burrito or burger joint and the entrees came out of the kitchen cold. For dessert we had two items called creme brulee, which wasn't, and a "pear" tart, without any pears in the tart. It didn't have any other discernible flavor either.

And it was empty. On a Saturday night in Manhattan. Which says it all. I guess that's why the dining room isn't visible from the street.

• Pros: adorable, great decor, reasonable wine list
• Cons: service, service, service.

Wonderful meal in quaint setting

This is a lovely, cozy, civilized place in which to escape from the chaos of the city. The prix fixe menu is reasonably priced and has a nice, varied selection. Very romantic place for an intimate dinner for two. A must for Anglophiles.

What a lovely little gem

Lovely romantic getaway -- this carriage house is everything that OIBL, TIBS is hyped to be but isn't. King's Carriage House is intimate & romantic with solid cooking, a well-thought wine list (not overpriced -yay!) and good continental service (solicitous but not overly friendly). The tables are close so you can hear every conversation going on around you, but if you're here with someone who enthralls you, you will notice no one else but your dinner date. While the food was very good, the setting is the bigger draw. Try to get a table in the front room of the second floor - the red walls are stunning and passion-inspiring. Second choice would be the back room on the first floor; it is a little chilly in winter but puts you instantly in Europe -- reminded us of a great little restaurant in Prague called Blue Duck.

Unknown jewel

One of the most delightful jacket & tie dining experiences on the Upper East side. The decor resembles a stylish English country home; the service is unobtrusive yet attentive. The food is understated perfection: beautifully presented on very hot plates, every dish we tried was a superbly balanced collection of complementary flavors. Very strongly recommended - and at current prices extremely good value.

Simply Charming, Romantic, Wonderful!

Our friends have been imploring us to try Kings' Carriage House, so we decided to celebrated our wedding anniversary there. And are we glad we did! Now we know why others call it a gem! From the moment we walked in the door to our last reluctant sip of port wine, we were transported in time and space to the old world charm of the English countryside. My starter of grilled shrimp and vegetable terrine was surpassed only by the perfectly grilled filet mignon with melted Stilton. My husband's medallions of venison were truly outstanding. We had little difficulty picking a wonderful Merlot from the extensive wine list. And the ginger brioche bread pudding was a sweetly befitting end to a marvelous meal. It was simply a wonderful meal and anniversary all the way around. The Kings' Carriage House is the crown jewel!
