If you have the time, you can find gems!

by cjallon at Citysearch

I just spent 4 hours painstakingly rummaging through the Salvation Army Hell's Kitchen racks. It took a while but I found some great gems, all brand labels. I was really pleased. Only downer is the next day, because of the tremendous amount of dust in all the clothes, I had an eye infection! Still think it was worth it, though.

  • Pros: great savings
  • Cons: need time to search

Hell's Kitchen thrift offers some surprises.

The Goods
Like most Salvation Army stores on the East Coast this SA has been picked clean of clothing. Call it Williamsburg Syndrome. But you'll do better upstairs on the third floor furniture department, where happily, there are still a few cool lamps and other kitsch.

Tubal
Before you leave, buy something, anything, just to watch the cashier bottle your cash and send it "Being John Malkovich" style through a pneumatic tube to parts unknown. Moments later the tube returns your change and a receipt.

Used the way I like it

by DrewPisarra_Citysearch at Citysearch

I saw a guy set up a few shopping carts as blockades so a female friend could change in a back corner. Prominent signs discourage this behavior but with no dressing room in sight I could hardly blame the enterprising duo. As a thrifty shopper myself, I'm aware that used clothing often doesn't indicate the size; holding pants up to my waist will only tell so much. I was sad to learn, however, that clothing which isn't properly priced here will be taken away by the cashier. I had to say goodbye to a snazzy pair of pink marching pants! The policy is strictly no pricetag, no sale. Thankfully, my depression lifted as there are plenty of other options to choose from and this place is supercheap.

  • Pros: Adventurous, Inexpensive
  • Cons: No Dressing Rooms
