A Real Tourist Trap by Candice C. at InsiderPages

Sardi's is a must experience for everyone that visits New York City, especially if they go to the theatre. My husband took me here on our third date after seeing Phantom, and it knocked my socks off. It leaves an amazing impression the first time you go - everything is first class, and there are all of these charicatures along the walls. It's a New York landmark.
I liked it so much, I brought my grandmother before seeing Gypsy for the Prix Fixe early supper. It just didn't have the same effect, although the food was quite good.
Finally, my family went to celebrate a couple of birthdays, and no one liked it at all. We all had been before, and the novelty wore off. The food is good, but it is really pricey. Make sure you ask about the Prix Fixe menu if you go.
Al Hirschfeld comes to Times Square!
by AntonEgo at Citysearch
All you need to know is Al Hirschfeld has countless of his caricatures all over the walls which makes is feel really special inside. It is the perfect blend between romantic restaurant and art gallery. if you are downtown whether sight-seeing or catching a show, it is a must see!
- Pros: Countless Al Hirschfeld Caricatures all over the walls!
- Cons: Small which is expected downtown Broadway at Times Square
A Classic!!!

There is no better place for pre-theater dinner! I always take friends/relatives from out of town and Friday was no exception. Steak tartar prepared tableside to order, fabulous pasta and chops, delicious desserts - try the Tahitian vanilla creme brulee! Service is friendly and flexible to your needs. To those who complain of the price - its New York, get over it! You can easily dine for $50 per person on the fixed menu offerings - not unreasonable in the Theater District.
- Pros: location, menu, history
- Cons: none for me
One of a kind!

This is truly a New York landmark. I was in the city from out of town and went to see a show. We had dinner at Sardi's afterwards - as other reviews have said, it's "the thing to do." Despite what some other reviewers have said, I didn't find the prices unreasonable at all. The food is outstanding (I had an amazing Caesar's salad and possibly the best chocolate cake I've ever eaten) and the service is first-class. And on top of that, you get the unique character and history of the restaurant...
- Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food
Best Show on Broadway
by Imhappyinnyc at Citysearch
Where to go for a drink after a Broadway show on a Saturday night? Why Sardi's of course. I was surprised to walk into the little downstairs bar to find only seven people in the historic drinking spot -- five at the bar, a couple tucked into one of the shelf tables. Though I was expecting a crush of theater-goers ,I quickly realized that there is comfort in small numbers -- especially when Bartender Jose is on duty. The visit soon became an intimate cocktail party with all guests offering tales of their Broadway experiences. We heard that Liza and Sarah Jessica are grand gals . . .that Jose calls Stephen Sondhiem "Steve" . . . that Mary (one of the guests at the bar) had a wealth of stories about Broadway celebs . Two gentlemen from Pennsylvania offered show reviews with detailed descriptions of the worst and the best . A little more about Mary -- it seems that she is a frequent visitor at the bar and enjoys sharing stories about her friends, from Lansbury to Pitt. So next time you are in Times Square on a Saturday night, stop by Sardi's for a drink and the "show." And please, give my regards to Jose and Mary.
- Pros: The service, the atmosphere, the stories

Complements to Sardis Bartender Dieago!!!
by tam65bowels at Citysearch
My husband and I were visiting NYC for the Holidays and we thought it would be fun to stop by Sardis for a drink. We knew it was known as being touristy, and we ushered to the bar upstairs. It was fairly crowded but we were able to find two seats at the bar. The bartender Dieago took excellent care of us, charming, and even took a small order from us, that he himself picked up and delivered. The appetizers were good. When we come back to the city in Spring to see Chorus Line we will surely come back and have dinner and another drink with our new friend.
- Pros: Dieago, charactures, good view
- Cons: Crowded bar

.....or they were there on a night when they were breaking in a new kitchen staff?
My and my husband's experience couldn't have been more different.
We were a good 40min early to our reseration and expected to wait, but we were promptly and graciously seated anyway.
We ordered the pre-fixe dinner and got two different appetizers, the ceasar salad and the spinach canelloni. The salad was perfectly dressed, and the dressing itself was what ceasar should be, light and lemony, not heavy and dense. The canelloni was delicious and served in a cream sauce and the dish was broiled to give it a delicous crust. It was warm and comforting on a cold night.
For our entree, we both had the ribeye, both of our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the butter sauce they were topped with was infused with wine and delicous. The dish was accompanied by haricots verts that were cooked perfectly (they tasted as though they were picked that morning), and pomm frites (I refuse to call them french fries, they were so delicous that that title doesn't do them justice).
For desert we had the cheese cake. This is the only cheese cake I've really ever enjoyed at a restaurant, and it tasted like my mother's recipie.
No, this restaurant is not at the cutting edge of haute cuisine, but, they excell at the preparation of the simple, traditional fare that they serve.
BTW I wan't expecting a restroom attendant so I didn't have cash on me to tip them. Remember to bring some cash.
- Pros: food, location (directly accross from the theater we were attending)
Excellent Service! Excellent FOOD! Excellent Atmosphere!

I had the greatest birthday ever going to Sardi's. I was treated very well by the staff and they were extremely attentive. My boyfriend and I chose Sardi's for my birthday and we will definitely be back for other occasions or just a nice meal in Manhattan. The food was PERFECT! The best meal out that I had in a very long time. We were extremely satisfied! We started with an appetizer Sampler, which has a tease of every delectable delight that you can imagine artistically placed on one plate. Then for our Main course, we dined on Mahi Mahi and Salmon over Greens - AGAIN, Perfectly cooked. Just the way we liked it. Dessert was a beautiful final touch. We shared a cheese cake, which came to us on a plate in a round shape with drizzles of a white chocolate and raspberry sauce. Their Coffee was top shelf too. We were very pleased with everything and they made sure we were seated and served on time before he left for a Broadway Show that we planned to see. Sardi's started our most wonderful evening! We will not be a stranger to Sardi's in the future. You now have two more happy customers.
- Pros: FOOD, Service, atmosphere
- Cons: The lighting in the room was a little darker than I liked it, but it did give it a romantic look.
Good Service

I went with a tour group. The atmosphere is nice and the waiters are polite. The food is expensive. My dish came late so I got a free desert.
- Pros: Service, atmosphere, deserts
- Cons: Prices
Pretty good, but not special
by jkurz at Citysearch
I fall somewhere in the middle. I would say that the atmosphere was nothing amazing, I didn't feel like the authenticity of the history of the place was nearly as prevelant as it could have been in the experience. For someone who is very familiar with Broadway it might prove exciting. The food was good but not great. We had a nice view but it was too cold in the dining room. They did a good job getting us out in time for our show and the doorman got us a cab with a smile, which was the single best part of the restaurant.
- Pros: Location, Doorman, Pretty good food
- Cons: Lacks inspiration, Chilly inside, Nothing special
