BUTCHER SHOP, Yikes

by mlgrinda

I ordered some Bundnerfleisch for my Fondue party. The delivered viande de Grison was so bad looking, I was afraid to taste it. When I did (it smelled alright, so thought I could try), it was decent although didn't taste like the Swiss kind.

I couldn't fathom offering this nasty looking meat to my guests, so sent out for some Speck instead which definitely didn't do it...

But the Bundnerfleisch from Le Marais was all brown and flaky. Bundnerfleisch is dark with a pinkish tint, not brown tint and all in one rectangular slices, not flaky round saucisson style slices.

The butcher on the phone assured me he's the best home made bundnerfleisch in the city. It was one of the worst piece of meat I'd ever seen.

Love this place. Best steak and bread ever. The prices are also very reasonable. Great desserts too.

Don't come on a Saturday night

by kmilberg

Went to Dinner last night with a friend. The Asti sparkling wine we ordered was flat - and the the steak took almost an hour to be ready. It was cold when it reached us. When we complained to the waitress, she went to get one of the staff - who argued with us, saying the plate was warm Obviously, not the brightest bulb in the socket, because what does the fact that the plate being warm have to do with the steak being cold. Anyhow - we were so upset after she argued with us - that we were leaving and I went to see the Maitre'D. He at least gave me a steak - which I shouldn't have even tried to eat - and still charged us $55.14 for flat wine and an apptetizer and more stale cold steak.

I had Le Marais host a major event for me about 6 weeks ago - cost me $2700 and they did a nice job. Interestingly enough, when I mentioned this to the staff - they still didn't care. Anyhow - suffice to say, I will find another steak house. One that treats their Jewish patrons like they aren't doing them a favor by feeding them - which unfortunately too many Kosher establishments still do.

  • Pros: Nice events
  • Cons: Horrible service on Saturday night and cold steak

Le Marais: Horrible food!

by nadiakanwal

Although the location of Le Marais is attractive (Theater District), the quality of food was unbelievably bad as it was cooked carelessly without paying attention to the spices. I definitely do not recommend this restaurant.

Best Kosher Steak In The City

by rachiemoo

I have been to Le Marais probably between 15-20 times. I absolutely adore the steak frites salad as well as the chocolate mousse. They have delicious appetizers and bread as well. I definitely recommend a reservation as they can get booked up, especially on Saturday evenings. The service can be hitt or miss. I recommend going at off times [during the week or for lunch] if you would like to receive better service. When it gets crowded it can take a while to get a waiter to come over to you or to receive your food. Request to sit upstairs, its a very romantic/quiet atmosphere and I prefer it over the downstairs area. To sum it up: the food is superb but you may have to put up with some below par service when it is crowded.

  • Pros: Delicious, high quality kosher food!
  • Cons: The service is not always up to par depending on how busy they get.

The worst service and treatment I could imagine

by saravans

I went to Le Marais with friends and we had to wait a very long time just to order, at least 45 minutes. This was after asking the staff 4-5 times for our waiter. Our food took a very long time to come as well, and we asked to speak to a manager. He was the rudest thing alive. He asked us what was wrong and as one of us said "we waited an hour for..." he cut us off...he asked a question and didn't even have the decency to listen to our issue. He called us a liar and was very rude and harsh towards us. He walked away in the middle of our "conversation". I would have at least expected him to listen to us and appologize for the wait. I would NEVER go back to Le Marais again. There are plenty of other kosher restaurants with better service in NYC. HIGHLY NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE.

  • Cons: Service, Manager- all rude and don't care about customers

Great buffalo steak

by joeval57

Food was very good, the buffalo steak was the best this side of Montana. The service was a bit slow and our waiter looked like he couldn't wait to go home. Also it was a little dusty in the dinning room. I rubbed my arm against the wall and got a nice grey spot on my sleve.

  • Pros: Buffalo Steak
  • Cons: Dusty

Great French steaks without French (poor) service

by micwer

I just love eating there. The food is always good, service impeccable and it's open super late. I came there last summer at 11:15 pm and they still seated us and were very nice, not trying to push us out of the restaurant like most other places open late do.

I would recommend La Surprise, le Steak au Poivre or la Cote de Boeuf.

I never tried any fish there, but I guess it would be a heresy to try one at such a great meat place. The French fries are perfect, crusty and light, and the bread they serve is the closest I found in kosher restaurants to a Parisian baguette. They have an extensive wine list and the desserts are very fine, without being fantastic.

A much better deal than Solo.

  • Pros: Steaks, Wine list, Lots of seating place
  • Cons: Can be noisy

A Magical pre-theatre or after theatre experience

by jswhite212

A superb dining experience, I highly recommend the second floor. Remember, restaurants were the theater of the 80s--Les Marais is about the excitement of the entire district! A single-malt to die for...It's hard to believe that this is Kosher. People looking for bland kosher food be forwarned.

  • Pros: lively
