I've been to Jewel of India a few times and have had a great meal each and every time. The food is fresh and tasty and there are plenty of choices for vegetarians. The service is very good and the location is perfect for a lunch meeting or dinner with friends.

Pros: Food, Service, Location

2 Star Rating: Below Average

Yes, the Jewel of India is charmingly eccentric, more shabby than chic but the food is awful! Maybe it was good a few decades ago and it's true that, by picking VERY carefully through the menu , a just about OK meal can be constructed. Anyway, the Jewel of India is historic with great photos from the Independence era, so enjoy it for that!

Pros: charming

Cons: Shabby

My friends and I visited Jewel of India a few weeks ago for dinner. The food was very fresh and tasty and they had plenty of options for the vegetarian in our group. The service was impeccable and we all had a very nice time.

Pros: Food, Service

Jewel of India has delicious Indian Food. I've tried many of the dishes there and all are served hot and fresh and with just the right amount of spice. The lunch buffet is excellent too. Great service and a convenient midtown location make this a mainstay in my rotation.

Pros: Food, Service, Location

Jewel of India was excellent. The food was delicious, the atmosphere very nice and the convenient midtown location made it a perfect venue for a large group after our day at the theatre.

My girlfriend and I return for buffet around 2pm today excitedly. The 2nd-floor waitress refused to sit us at a wider, comfortable table. I asked now is not peak time and less than one-third tables were seated. She made an quick story that there would be 50 people coming sitting there soon. The buffet was closed less than 30 minutes while we ate. I couldn't understand why she needed to lie for her laziness of cleaning table after clients left.

Pros: none

Cons: service

This is the epitome of an Indian restaurant that has no clue of what service is all about nor do they now what good food is all about, and on top of that they have the sheer arrogance of tacking on a 18% TIP (yes TIP !) on the check when they do not know what the word TIP stands for ! Maybe someone ought to educate the so called "Manager" (more like the "Mis-Manager") by the name of Anand Gadkar, who thinks he is running a Shiv Sena dhaba in Grant Road (instead of a fine cuisine place in NYC) what the word TIP stands for i.e TIP = To Insure Prompt service . !! Jeez how do these people get to run restaurants in a city like NYC..(my hometown)..is beyond me... I was there with my wife and my 12 yr old and my 3 yr old and when I challenged the Mandaory 18% TIP the arrogant and profane Gadkar tacked on - he had the gall to call me a "bustard" (his pronunciation :) )in front of my family. Jeez. These low life Indian restaurateurs should be made extinct soon. Welcome to America..Not !!

Pros: None

Cons: An Arrogant Manager by the name of Anant Gadkar - who doesnt know what the restaurant biz in NYC is all about

I went to this place on Wednesday November 15 at 3.30 PM. I heard about this restaurant and always wanted to go there. I did not know that the restaurant was closed by 3 PM. I entered with my colleagues. There is this guy sitting in the restaurant and I asked him if the restaurant is still open or not as I did not see any one. He was so rude to me and without even getting up from the chair he replied that “No food it is closed , go ,” and all the time he was plucking his teeth and was sitting on a chair keeping his leg on the table May be the food is good inside, may be the interiors are good but in a service oriented industry like that of restaurants if the service is not good and if people are so dumb and rude not to even reply to your customers properly then take my word this restaurant is not worth even considering to go. All I can say was I was so embarrassed by the way I was treated.

Pros: I dont know if any

Cons: the worst service i ever saw in my life time

The standouts here were the wonderful service and the great deal on the lunch buffet. The food was good (especially for the price) - not the best Indian food I've ever had, but quite tasty. They do tone the spice down a lot to accomodate the general masses. The only downside was that the naan was a bit dried out (but I suppose that's the danger of serving it in a buffet line). I imagine this is a great place to grab a business lunch.

Pros: Great deal; Friendly and Attentive Service

Cons: Naan was dry

A serene Indian gem in the unusual setting of a busy midtown street.  See the full editorial review.

Insider Tips

Save Money

Though most restaurants present a buffet lunch that's inferior to their main offerings, Jewel of India bucks the trend. Its spectacular daily spread gives you a vast array of excellent dishes at very reasonable cost.
