I am a 20 year old girl who went there with my 19 year old sister. We had no money so that was all we could afford. We had book for 4 nights over the internet. When we arrive. They had lost out booking and the $450US we had paid (which we never got back), and we were forced to pay cash to stay there one night - which we did. The place was SOOO DISGUSTING (and we are not fussy) - we rearranged our flights so we left the next morning. I could not of DARE stayed there 4 nights. Id rather pay a little more and stay somewhere decent. The location is great. The staff were absolutely disgustingly rude and ruthless. While we were there - there was many other couples and familys complaining. The asian lady was ignorant to it all. we had many many many problems in the 12 hours we stayed there. We did not sleep under the sheets - it was filthy we slept on top and went and bought a blanket. there was hair and gunk all over the bed. the double bed took up the entire room there was NO WHERE to put a suitcase or to even walk around the bed. The bathroom bath and sink were clogged with hair and rust and overflowing. We were VERY glad to leave at 7am the following morning. One of the worst nights of my life. We were then charged $20 to hold our luggage while we waited for the plane, and the Asian woman refused to get our flight information off their fax machine. After many arguments and begging she went and retrieved it for us and charged us $5 to get the fax. I wouldnt stay at this brothel/dump if someone paid me, id rather camp on a bench outside. The most rudest people i have met in my life. This is an expensive hostel.
Pros: Location - close to everything
Cons: EVERYTHING - ABSOLUTE FILTH

When you visit New York please do not stay on this fking dump, please stay away from this shthole, New York is full of great hotels there is no room service, there is no cleaning (you have to do the cleaning if you want), when you arrive to the hotel it looks like a drg house (maybe the asian btch that administrate this dump sales), DONT GET NEAR THIS HOTEL, SAVE YOURSELF FROM THIS HOTEL, IF YOU DONT HAVE A HOTEL ON NEW YORK, STAY AND SLEEP ON A STREET BUT NOT ON THIS HOTEL, AVOID THIS HOTEL.
Pros: no
Cons: evreything

Truly a real dump! Not chic or campy, no...the Carter is a five star world-class dump. Greeted by a inattentive staff with well-developed rudeness and the stay went downhill from there. Room was wall to wall mattress in the hotel's ruse to label the room a double. Decorated with dated carpet squares on the wall the place is bizarre! Our bathroom is hard to rate. I've been in cleaner public facilities in Tiajuana 40 yrs ago. Given a street side room. Ugh, Noisy!! (43rd Ave on a Friday night simply doesn't quite down). Again, this hole is $150.00 a night! Proof in New York that one doesn't need to see a gun to get robbed. Avoid. Sleep in the subway or join the homeless fellow on the sidewalk just outside the Carter. On second thought, he may not be homeless at all but only prefers sleeping outside for free instead of getting fooled into staying inside at the Carter!

I couldn't save myself and my family from going, but I can save you from being Carterīs victim! Please don't let them mislead you with the great location and quite decent pictures in their Website: they take advantage because that way you are not able to smell the terrible smell in those creepy corridors, sleep in those dirty rooms where you run into other guests such FLEAS ETC, or to deal with its unfriendly personnel. Beware of burglary!!! Since ALL employees have access to your room, the one that steals your belongings can't be identified, as it happened to us! Hotel security is just for decoration purposes, and the police couldnīt identify the person who entered in our room and pick up things that never appeared (a value of $ 2000 WAS STOLLEN from our bags) his/her fingerprints because the room is so messy and dirty that a million fingerprints can be found there. The police literally told us when we desperately called them to report the burglary that this was not the first time something like that happened in that hotel... If you didn't get it clear, this is the bottomline: Carter hotel is a complete rip off.

I checked into this hotel alone about 6:00 pm, put my suitcase in the room and left to have dinner. When I returned at 10:00 pm, I noticed that in my absence someone had been in my bathroom and defecated in the toilet and left without flushing!! When I told the desk clerk, his response was, "Why was someone in your room?" (Exactly my question to you, Hotel Carter). When I told the "security guard", his response was "What do you want me to do? It's late." I checked out immediately. I went back the next morning to ensure that my credit card wouldn't be charged. The desk clerk told me that the charge slip was ripped up when I checked out. Three days later, $232 in charges appeared on my credit card for two nights stay at the Hotel Carter. Calls to the manager Abdul (no one knows his last name) have gone unanswered. For the cheap price, I didn't expect luxury but I did expect to feel safe. And I don't expect to be charged for a room that I didn't stay in and then to be lied to about it repeatedly. The behavior of the staff of the Hotel Carter both on that night and since then has been criminal - they stole money from me as surely as if they had gone into my wallet. Steer clear!
Pros: None
Cons: Staff, security issues

The worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Just there for a 3 day class. Sorry I didn't have a chance to look for and read reviews before we went there. We would have found something else. The location is wonderful. If you're wanting to walk around, it's right at Times Square - walking distance to the theatres and restaurants. The good thing (after now reading some of the older reviews) is that we did not see any insects or rodents. The staff was the worst. Not a single staff person was nice or friendly. They DO NOT clean your room at all. We asked, after the 1st day when we returned and found the room just as we left it, when would they be cleaning our room. They told us they clean them every other day. We checked in on Wed. and left Mon. They NEVER cleaned it. We had to go ask for clean towels. Towels is pushing it as well. The ones in the room when we checked in were OK. When we asked for clean ones they handed us something that felt like a thick piece of rough paper. The good thing about them not cleaning our room was we didn't have to worry about the cleaning crew stealing anything. How can they steal if they don't enter the room. Our toilet wouldn't flush. We did ask them to fix that and they did. The cord for the tv had been cut and a little part of the coating stripped. We unplugged the tv to plug in our laptop. It shocked my husband. We told them about it when we asked them to fix the toilet. They said we shouldn't be touching it. They didn't care he got hurt. NO customer service or even customer concern. We will NOT stay there again.
Pros: The ONLY pro is location and we didn't see any insects or rodents as others have mentioned
Cons: Worst customer service - They will NOT clean your room

Please do not believe the good / average reviews! The Hotel Carter was hands down one of the most terrifying experiences for my friends and I when we stayed there, and we certainly don't consider ourselves sheltered. We have traveled all over the world and are not high maintenance, nor are we easily scared. From the moment we entered the hotel, we knew we had been completely deceived by the pictures posted on the internet; 100% false advertising! You will be lucky if the employees behind the bullet-proof glass in the lobby speak any English. Our bell boy (and I use that term very loosely) was unable to get the lock on our door open so we were forced to change rooms right from the start. The sheets on the bed were stained and we were not successful in getting them replaced. What was hanging from the windows was nothing more than faded thin sheets. The sink in the bathroom was rusted as were the exposed pipes on the ceiling and wall. The toilet flooded from the first use. The windows were not at all insulated, and even though we were on the 8th floor, we could hear the loud street noise and dance music from the club at the bottom of the building all night, every night for the 5 nights we stayed there. I could go on, but I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no amount of money saved that is worth staying at the Hotel Carter. In fact, they should pay customers for staying there. Pay a bit more and stay ANYWHERE BUT there!

For your own safety, do NOT stay there. My husband is an NYPD detective who has gone there numerous times. Crimes occur on a daily basis. There are pictures of people who have stayed there on tripadvisor dot com. There are rodents of all kinds, and they have a serious bed insect problem. There are also bullet holes in the windows. As a New Yorker, I am ashamed that they would call this a hotel. I would hate for people to spend there hard-earned money on a place like this and have a bad experience in NY. This city is wonderful and there are many other hotels that deserve your money. GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!!!!

I stayed at the Carter while in the city on business, at the suggestion of a travel agent who knew it only by price. I can't argue with the price or location. Everyone who has commented postively on this place on those bases is 100% correct. Where else can you find a room in midtown for a hundred bucks a night? However. I arrived and was told, through the bulletproof glass, that the hotel had just discontinued the use of credit cards. I would have to pay cash for my stay. I was outraged! I had made a reservation, but noone had warned me of this, and I didn't have two hundred dollars to spend. Couldnt' they make an exception? No, they had completely disconnected their credit-card reader, and couldn't take my plastic even if they wanted to. Could I see the manager? Yes - come back Monday for that. I was stuck. My only option was to draw the full cost of my two nights' stay from the ATM machine in the lobby, paying the hefty ATM fee for the privilege. My room was as abysmal as described in other reviews. Deeply depressing. Much water damage to the walls, a TV that only got static, and a remote control with its batteries stripped out of it. The only light in the room was a bare light bulb in the middle of the room, giving the whole place a sickly prison-like feeling. It reminded me of scenes from Midnight Cowboy. Yup - it's cheap! But you won't see me there again.
Pros: Location & price
Cons: Cash payment only! Rooms tiny and ill-maintained.

arrived on the thursday and within the hour we had changed rooms 3 times first the shower would not stop dripping making the atmosphere very damp indeed , the 2nd smelt of burnt wood ? and the 3 rd was just ok . spoke to many couples who were also not happy ,one irish couple complained off being bitten severly, from what I do not know . Then we had to ask for the sheets to be changed , my partner was tossed some sheets and told if she wanted it done she had to do it herself , she stood firm and finally got it done by the hotel . We would never stay there again and recommend you try elsewhere first
Pros: location
Cons: the hotel its self
