A gorgeous waterfront with fabulous retail shopping.
by Contributor at Citysearch
Overview
A historic trading port that dates back to the 1600s, the "Street of Ships" is now home to more than 120 shops, restaurants, eateries and pushcarts filled with the gifts, tastes and styles of New York City. Quaint cobblestone streets and scenic views of the Brooklyn Bridge offer a welcome and peaceful respite from the grime of urban living. Best of all--it's free.
Features
Since its restoration in the late '60s, the South Street Seaport has gone through a period of intense growth. The last few decades of the 20th century saw the openings of the South Street Seaport Museum, the Pier 17 Pavilion, the Fulton Market and numerous high-end shops. But if you don't want to go shopping or pay a fee at the museum, it doesn't cost anything to go and just hang out with friends and family--there's always street performances or live music going on.

Good place to cozy up with your man

The lounge chairs on the deck is a relaxing place for you to read the paper, fall asleep. Sometimes it is very crowded, you might only be able to get only one chair. It is a good excuse to sit on the lap of your honey. It overlooks the water. It is actually quite beautiful, (if you don't mind the occasional piece of garbage floating in the Hudson River). No but seriously, it is reaaaaally a nice view on a nice summer or spring day.
- Pros: romantic

Lots of shops...like a big mall. I like the cobblestone area across the street the best. Crowded. Very commercialized. Good place to find lots of stores, but a long walk from the subway - only good if you want to spend a few hours there, not quick shopping trips.
just relax

First couple of visits to South St, Seaport were fun and exciting, checking out the little shops(EXPENSIVE) and restaurants and stores in the small mall. After about the 3rd or whatever time going, it was really same old same old, expensive, nothing REALLY remarkable , about it , EXCEPT the views of the East River, and the Brooklyn Bridge, always outstanding. One July summer, early evening we managed to catch an outdoor band complete with horns, that was exceptional! The sun was over by the East River, the sky was deep blue, it was 80 degrees and dry(for once) and just a lovely way to enjoy an early evening in a MOST fabulous city. So, wonderful if your lucky enough to stumble upon an outdoor venue like that, otherwise, smells sometimes, and very touristy, and expensive. Sometimes you will catch street performers on the Brick section, near the outdoor restaurants.
- Pros: open, airy, outdoors
- Cons: expensive, crowded, can be smelly

great view of brooklyn and the river; but if you don't like crowds- then this may not be your thing.
it's a different view of new york, and it's nice for visitors or if you just want a drink and enjoy the view; it's okay to try once.
otherwise you may be better off going to boat basin for a nice view and cheap drink.
- Pros: great view
- Cons: out of the way, crowded
