Knowledge goes a long way.

It's good to see that people really know their stuff when it comes to personal computing. The prices are competitive and the people are freindly.

With two music stores--one pop, jazz and classical and another Latin and world music--it's a world unto itself.

by Contributor

The Scene
They've got all the ambience of a factory outlet--both stores seem accidentally decorated, with yellow wood panelling, cylindrical lighting and leftover neon. They're playing Miles Davis, Counting Crows, Bob Marley and Marc Anthony, depending on the store and floor. The music is smothered, however, by J&R's mall-cum-loading-dock environment.

The Goods
The pop, jazz and classical store has everything issued by the major labels, all displayed alphabetically in crowded bins. The countless titles make you realize the breadth of pop's mainstream appeal. Rock still rules, but Nashville, Broadway, and the 'hood are more than adequately represented. Greatest hits, popular collections and box sets are also available, and a quarter of one floor is sectioned off for cassettes only. The world and Latin store offers Asian, Irish/Celtic and Middle Eastern selections in the basement; reggae, soca, calypso and African music is on the street level and Latin, Brazilian and South American offerings are on the upper level. Each floor has a breathtaking comprehensiveness given the limited space and the niche-market nature of the music offered here.

Best record/CD store!!

by sisko24

This is easily, my favorite CD/record store. I have found recordings just lying around in the classical bins which are ordinarily only obtainable through import houses and special order. The ambience is not the greatest, but when the classical section was in an upstairs section of a separate location (no longer) I once saw the Mayor of the City of New York (yes, Rudy Giuliani) looking through the CD bins; but for his NYC police detective bodyguard, he was alone.

Quite a place!

  • Pros: great selection, easy to find CDS, varied prices
  • Cons: poor ambience

Home away from home

When shopping at J&R, I almost feel that I am home. I know where everything is and their cutomer service people are always so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
