Go during an interesting exhibit

by leotoni

Unfortunately, the permanent collection of the Guggenheim does not live up to its reputation. Very few examples of Monet, Picasso, and other modern artists you would expect to see at a museum of its caliber. The building in itself is an attraction, although it is going through some renovation at the moment. The Guggenheim does bring excellent exhibits, and that is what you should go see. From Aztec culture to architecture, they never disappoint.

  • Pros: Exhibits
  • Cons: Permanent collection not as good as one would expect, pricey

A must-see for art and architecture lovers.

by bootlegblonde

You really must take the time to see The Guggenheim while in NYC. The building itself is worth the trip and the ongoing Kandinsky exhibit is worth the price of admission ten times over. Right now, the outside facade is under renovation...which is dissapointing. But there is quite enough going on inside to keep you happy. Allow enough time to see the permanent collection also.

  • Pros: architecture, art, museum shop
  • Cons: rude guards, can get crowded

Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture will forever be the star here.

The Scene
The Guggenheim holds an amazing assortment of Impressionist, post-Impressionist and other modernist work. The permanent exhibit devoted to the Justin K. Thannhauser Collection is chock-full of works of late 19th- and 20th-century masters, and the collection of paintings by Kandinsky and Chagall are among the best anywhere.

The Collection
A controversial expansion and renovation in the early '90s restored and enhanced the Guggenheim. Now the art has some breathing room in the form of a gallery annex with well-proportioned spaces free of the sloping floors that define the viewing experience in the famously spiral-shaped main building. Every year, several blockbuster exhibitions are mounted, often devoted to the work of a single modern artist--or more often, less traditional topics, like motorbikes or Giorgio Armani.

give it a try

by animate719

It seems to me that the world of art has gotten a bad name from those of you who know very little to nothing about it. I don't understand why people have such a close-minded view of art right now when we're so accepting of other things, but art has extended its parameters and just because some people don't understand it doesn't mean that it's all horrible. Although the special exhibition isn't spectacular, it does have some good things to offer. Instead of going in there with a mind that painting and Impressionism is where art ended, try to understand that there's so much more to art than that.

That Was Art?

by joe_smith36

Except for the permanent display with Picasso, Monet and others, the show was awful. Large screen videos with people just standing there isn't usually considered art. The 3 photos of the underbelly of society (the pregnant woman, the naked crazy mom and the guy with the lawn in his living room) were really good though.

  • Pros: permanent collection, underbelly photos, the building
  • Cons: really bad exhibit

Great Building, Boring Art

by bluejay_19

The star of the show is the Wright building. It's terrific. Most of the museum was devoted to "Moving Pictures", which was horrible. What remained of permanent collection was fine, but the building is still the star.

  • Pros: Building, Cafe, Location
  • Cons: Special Exhibit Awful

Good building design

by johnscale

I thought the Guggenheim was a good museum.

I liked the way the spiraling centre of the museum held the temporary exhibitions, with the permanent collections in rooms off the central area.

Where's the collection?

by chula

Every other room seemed to be a gift shop. I went to see art, not to buy crap. If you happen to love the exhibit that's there, then great; if you don't, you've just thrown away your money.

A Landmark that must be seen!

by maryann_1111

We were on a short vacation to NYC and had time for one museum visit - without a doubt we knew it had to be the famous Frank Lloyd Wright designed Guggenheim. It's a little confusing to navigate between the original building and the expansion that connects to it.

  • Pros: Historical, Lovely location, Not too expensive
  • Cons: Needs renovating, Confusing floor plan
