Staten Island's first public library--founded by a women's club and a gentlemen's society organization.

The History
Richmond's first public library was founded In 1899 by the Philemon Literary Society, a women's club, and the Philo Debating Society, a men's club. It joined the New York Public Library system in 1903, and relocated to its current address about a year later.
The Collection
The library offers materials on the history of Staten Island as well as videos--including a fine assortment of classic films from the 1930s and 1940s--for adults and children who would rather see movies than read. Toddler programs and picture book hours ensure those still learning their ABCs will be entertained.
